Guest guest
Kim, I am interested to hear how the bike riding goes! Let us know if you are able to integrate it into your day to day errands and such. That would be a great way to add to cardio and burning calories. Plus it would keep me from buying a bunch of junk I couldn't carry home! I've been thinking about getting a used bike, so I would love to hear if it is working for you...Keep us posted. Amy > > Hello all ... and welcome to the many new members of the last few weeks! > > Just checking in .... my little one started preschool, and it's a bumpy ride so far. Daylight Savings Time has thrown us all off - my kids aren't good sleepers anyway, and I'm a light sleeper since motherhood took hold, and my husband dozes off 'at random', so not much for him has changed, lol!! > > However, I've been telling everyone and telling myself that once my little one started her preschool, that I would start walking the neighborhood in lieu of joining Curves .... why pay money for something when I can do it for free? Also, the preschool hours, and Curves' lunch break, and my 9yo's dismissal time - the timing wouldn't work out right anyway. > > With gas prices going up again, it suddenly occurred to me that getting my 15 year old bike out might be a good idea. I told my husband my idea of running errands by bike instead of driving everywhere - he got my bike out, filled the tires and tested it. The only thing I need now is a bike lock with a key Most of my errands are within 2 miles of home -- too long to walk but too short to justify driving, and I often do small trips anyway because of money and the kids. > > So, yesterday I went for my first walk around the neighborhood of the preschool, and also went to the thrift store. Later on I tested my bike in the driveway. I'm considering possibly going for a bike ride first thing in the morning, like I used to go for walks until the crime rate became a worry again (I go out around 5:30 a.m. while it is still dark). I think I might wait a few more weeks for it to get warmer and also to be a little lighter early in the morning. > > It amazes me that they have proven that DST does not save anything, but costs more, and it throws everyone's sleep cycle off .... yet because the government says so, we have to do it anyway. Try explaining that one to kids ..... <sigh> > > Anyway, I still don't have time to participate in anything, but I already knew that the month of March would be extra tough for my family. I'm hoping to start riding my bike regularly again (first time in years), for transportation, but also (if nothing else) to give myself a chance to clear my head from all the stress going on. > > I was also sent a notice last night about a job opportunity with an organization that services people with disabilities. My resume is going out in today's mail, and we'll see what happens. I'm a little concerned about what schedule they would want, though it is only a few hours a week - but it could be a foot in the door. > > regards, > > > Kim > " If you know one autistic child, you know one autistic child. Hi Amy, Thanks for your response I haven't been able to try it yet, but it's one of my goals. This week I resumed walking while my daughter is in preschool, but haven't been able to implement much more than that just due to timing and work deadlines. Next week is " Easter Break " , so both of my kids will be home (yikes!). The other idea I'm toying with is going out at 5:30 a.m. again and riding then - even with a crime problem, it's harder to catch someone on a bike than it is if they're walking (my idea last year). I'm considering a 5:30 a.m. bike ride on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and my walks on M/W/F while my little one is in preschool. And - you said it - it's harder to buy a lot of stuff when I know that I'll have to carry it home. And often I have found myself thinking, I really need to get these two small items, and it doesn't seem worth it to drive for just that, but it will take too long to walk there. I also need to get a bike chain, but I'm noticing that our area stores don't have any bike rails to lock a bike on. So I also want to check out stores I don't usually shop at to see if they do. I won't just leave my bike sitting out, so if there is nothing to lock it onto ... I keep seeing more news reports about gas prices jumping another 20¢ to 30¢ more per gallon, and it's already over $3.10 here ... I will post about this (bike riding) later when I've had a chance to try it out and see what works and what doesn't (for me). Kim
Guest guest
Wow. Your post shows me how little I'd thought about the reality of it. I have no idea if our stores have bike racks. I live in Texas and it isn't exactly biker friendly. Or cyclist friendly...I think it is " biker " friendly! Ha! Anyway...definitely let us know how it goes. If you go early, maybe you could recruit a friend to go? Safety issues keep me from walking early or late at night. There have just been too many incidents. I hope it works out. Hang in there. Starting pre- school and then having spring break means your schedule isn't quite regular. Maybe wait a couple of weeks before you start something that new. The bike will be there when you are ready! I'm facing the break too, so I am planning for snacks and meals in advance. I guess I am trying to think of what I'll do when I am not in my routine and I get hungry. That was a suggestion of my wonderful weight loss buddy. Have a good break with your kids! Amy
Guest guest
That's great, Kim! Focusing on today is the best way to work through challenges. That way, things never get out of control, because on the small scale, probl;ems are pretty manageable. Kudos to your friend for helping you, too. I love that you want to make your own bread. I get so disgusted trying to find healthy bread at the store. One word of caution, though. That homemade bread is twice as dense, and thus twice as high in calories as store bought bread, so adjust your eating accordingly. Keep up the great work!
