In people with Dopamine deficiency all the symptoms of giving up and lack of motivation are demonstrated. Vit B6 deficiency can cause deficiency in a number of neurotransmitters and dopamine needs Vit B6, magnesium, zinc as cofactors. Vit B12, folate, b3 and Vit C also contribute to dopamine production. Typical signs in people of dopamine deficiency are: exhaustion mentally and physically; muscle tightness; lack of motivation; depression and some times tremors. The Vit B's are very used up by the neuro system and there is a strong possibility this may be contributing as well as Magnesium and zinc considering the surgery. Perhaps supplementing with a complex Vit B and magnesium and zinc might help while the owners consider what they can live with. Just another thought. Dr Toni Lynch BVSc Hons GDAnimal Chiro Wobbler's dog giving up I have a 13 year old shepherd that had wobbler's surgery 7 weeks ago. She had been having symptoms and going down on occasion for 3 years before being reffered for surgery.Prognosis to owners by surgeon only 50/50 at best. She had almost no muscle in the hind quarters before surgery. We have been working very hard on a daily basis and have been making tiny improvements until last week. She is partial wt. bearing in front legs but won't completely support her weight and non wt bearing in the rear. She was re-evaluated by surgeon yesterday. Implants look good, she has deep pain and voluntary movement. Medically she checks out fine. He says he doesn't expect her to get up from what he sees. And honestly at this point I am wondering myself although I am always the last to give up. She has reached a point of depression and now fights me and the owners and slaps and bites when I try to work with her. In the water she now just rolls on her side and refuses.I am trying everything to motivate her and the owners are too. Physically she should be able to rehab but I think she has just given up and we are about to hit 2 weeks with NO progress. Any ideas? And when do you call it? I am doing h20, e-stim, rom,wt bearing, cart, walkabouts, physioball, side to sternal, crawls, assisted sits,therabands- you name it. we also had a vet try accupuncture and it didn't seem to help.
