Children with autism often engage in problem behaviors in order to avoid participating in or being in close proximity of routine activities that are associated with specific stimulus, such as a loud noise. Some of these activities include haircuts, vacuuming, and going to the dentist. This workshop is designed to provide parents, caregivers and educators with strategies for reducing these problem behaviors. Topics include: Understanding how children are able to change their environment by engaging in behaviors that are controlled and maintained by escape/avoidance; Antecedent manipulations to reduce the value of escape/avoidance by reducing the aversive nature of the activity; Shaping behavior in successive approximations; Data collection.
