By all means,   you’ve been doing this for a long time already,. Jean.  Keep going! s. Dear all,I'm starting to write to those who write particularly helpful or very destructive editorials to thank them/protest and give them facts and some personal testimony. What do you think?RE: need a letter writing campaignThat’s quite a presentation, Les. I would have a couple of additions, but you’ve got quite a list and the object is to show that there are alternatives to the pill. Getting back to Fr. , the original point was that contraception is described as a preventive health service. I assume that when drugs are prescribed as treatment the insurer would handle them like any other prescription. Perhaps saying what Les says at the end is simplest: The pill may relieve some symptoms, may prevent progression of some underlying diseases such as endometriosis and cystic acne but does not cure. And it will cause a number of problems most listed by Les..HannaFrom: nfpprofessionals [mailto:nfpprofessionals ] On Behalf Of Les RuppersbergerSent: Sunday, February 19, 2012 8:48 PMTo: nfpprofessionals Subject: RE: need a letter writing campaignI am attaching a slide presentation that I have done for the CMA and will be doing for the Canadian CMA in April. It basically speaks to treating all these conditions with other modalities; there is an entire text book dedicated to these issues by Hilgers, MD form Pope VI institiute in Nebraska. I don’t mind sharing this info with all.Les Ruppersberger, D.O.From: nfpprofessionals [mailto:nfpprofessionals ] On Behalf Of VelezSent: Sunday, February 19, 2012 8:27 PMTo: nfpprofessionals Subject: Re: need a letter writing campaignHanna,I agree with everything you say, but I would like to know what is a good way to explain the following point to the general public: " There are those who use contraceptive steroids to treat endometriosis, dysmenorrhea, leiomyomata, PCOS – all controversial, " ?Since there is such a generalized practice of the use OCP's for all these things, what is a good way of explaining that this is bad medicine. Should we say: " OCP's are a shot-gun and empirical approach to illness, which have not been proven in studies " ? Is there something more we can say to this and what Les and others have said about this on server list?Fr. What I meant was that contraception does not treat or prevent any disease, as fertility is not a disease, neither is pregnancy. Responsible parenthood can be achieved by NFP. There are those who use contraceptive steroids to treat endometriosis, dysmenorrhea, leiomyomata, PCOS – all controversial, that is why I added that when these drugs are used for contraception they are not treating any disease. These are life style choices and should not be in the core preventive services. The interview with Tomeo went well, I’ve had inquiries from NY to British Columbia as a result. I spoke also about the fact that the steroids have to be given in supraphysiological doses to block ovulation, and also increase SHBG – sex hormone binding globulin – which decreass free testosterone which is needed for libido. So the drug which is supposed to liberate women to have sex at any time without their becoming pregnant also robs at least half the women of their enjoyment of sex.By the way today’s Washington Post Fact checker finally acknowledged that the much ballyhooed figure of 98% of Catholic women using contraception is wrong. I had written them over a week ago, my letter was not used, but they got the idea.Hanna From: nfpprofessionals [mailto:nfpprofessionals ] On Behalf Of VelezSent: Sunday, February 19, 2012 2:49 PMTo: nfpprofessionals Subject: Re: need a letter writing campaignHanna,This is helpful. I would appreciate if you or D. would expound on n. 1. Les has already made a comment on this, and the lack of trials to prove the claim that they work. I need to go back to it.I tried to find your show on Tomeo's web archive, but am having some computer trouble.God bless you, Fr. After reading multiple letters to the editor praising, protecting or mischaracterizing contraception, I think it’s time to take a leaf out of the play book Planned Parenthood used so successfully against Komen. While not losing sight of the violation of religious liberty the mandate imposes, much light needs to be shed on the fact that hormonal contraceptives1. when used for contraception do not treat any disease.2 need to be given in doses large enough to suppress normal ovulation3. have a long list of side effects4. do not prevent STI’s etc. etc.5.Explain not only the effectiveness and flexibility of use of NFP in any reproductive circumstance, but how refraining from intercourse is different from engaging in it while blocking its normal effect.6. Explain that intercourse during times of infertility is not incomplete, as each partner brings what each has to give.7. Discuss the difference between removing a normal function and restoring a normal function. Right now there are arguments equating OC’ with Rx for E.D. While on the face of it they’re opposites one can question the appropriateness of trying to bring back youth when it’s gone… 8. Invite promiscuity and subsequent emotional pain9.Have not decreased unplanned pregnancies or abortions. (See Ross Douthat in Feb. 19, New York Times The Safe, Legal and Rare Iillusion http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/19/opinion/sunday/douthat-the-safe-legal-rare-illusion.html?nl=todaysheadlines & emc=tha21210. acknowledge possible benefits i.e. decreased endometrial and ovarian CA, but outnumbered by increase in breast CA, also Cx CA mediated by promiscuously acquired HPV by one or another partner.I’ll be interested in your responses.Hanna Klaus, M.D.Natural Family Planning Center of Washington, D.C. and Teen STAR Program4400 East West Highway # 911Bethesda, MD 20814-4510 hannaklaus@...http://www.teenstarprogram.org-- Fr.
