Guest guest
I just got off the phone with the 504 coordinator. It got rather heated. I told her I didn't want Micah to use the alpha smart writer at this time, and went on to explain the problem he was having with buttons. She said " I told you we cant keep changing the plan " ....I pointed out that this is the only requested change, and its because we didn't know buttons were a problem at the time of the meeting. Her comment to me...as usual... " well we aren't seeing that here. " I said just because you don't see it doesn't mean he isn't under considerable distress. She went on to say they were very nice to us and gave us what we asked for. But I didn't ask for the alpha smart I asked he be allowed to type projects on the computer. She said you didn't specify...and she's right, I didn't. Husband attended the meeting, I couldn't be there. But I typed it out, so we went a few rounds about what requests I typed. She said since husband agreed to it, we have to use it. Then she added, he has to be able to write at school, I told her his hand writing is improving since starting the med. and I think given time it we be back where it had been. It is now legible. Micah is very stressed out about this, he's afraid he will get stuck on the buttons, and the kids will see it. She said she will wait a week or 2 but then he has to start using it. I told her we are his parents and we make the decisions regarding what he's exposed to, and if it will make the OCD and TS symptoms worse, then no, no matter what the district says. She just repeated she would give it a week or 2, then he starts. She asked when we found out the buttons were an issue, I told her Saturday, I could tell she was wanting to know why I didn't tell them at the meeting. I told her we just found out..... but she just said " well he doesn't wet himself in computer class. " It didn't matter what I said, she's going to make him use it, I pointed out it could make the OCD and TS worse, but that didn't matter. She then added that she was just trying to do what was best for Micah, well so am I. I've got a child I can barely get to school, and now she wants to add to his stress by making him use something that will make him stand out as different, a fear of his, plus his fear of buttons. What I really don't get is that her son has OCD! although she said its mild. Now she wants to talk to his therapist, and asked for her name. I already told her I wanted to talk to the therapist first before he starts using it, but now she wants to talk to her too. I feel like I have no parental rights! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr **************Make your life easier with all your friends, email, and favorite sites in one place. Try it now. Guest guest
I'm glad that his therapist will advocate for Micah. Â Hopefully, the 504 coordinator will be more willing to provide appropriate accommodations once she hears from her. Re: Re: heated debate with 504 coordintotor Hi Jordana, Thanks so much for the thoughtfulness, its so kind of you to offer. I called Micah's therapist, and she's going to call the 504 coordinator and try to explain the stress associated with the buttons. She also said since Micah just started med and therapy she doesn't think it would be good to push him too fast as he needs time to adjust, so hopefully she will have more luck than I did. Thanks for always being there Jordana, I appreciate it so much!! In a message dated 12/16/2008 11:12:34 A.M.
