OT: Plans in the works for a Documentary on school placement

I am posting this for one of my clients. We are very excited to share this

great undertaking with the autism community at large and welcome any

Our family will be starting a documentary this fall on our son Jonah, and

the educational program we have put together for him at a private school.

In 2004 we filed a lawsuit against our public school district in order to

receive appropriate services for our son. Fortunately, we came to a mutual

agreement with our district out of court, and we now run our own independent

program within a small catholic school. Jonah is with his peers throughout

his school day for everything he is able to participate and benefit, and at

other times is pulled out to a private designated room by his highly trained

aides to work on academics using ABA/Verbal Behavior. Jonah’s day is now

completely individualized to his needs. Our senior therapist runs both his

school and home program. We pass a duffle bag back and forth every day with

his current programs so that everything is consistent and Jonah masters

items quickly and efficiently. We also have a Certified Behavior Analyst

who comes into school every 3 weeks to oversee Jonah’s program.

We have approached some private organizations to help with the documentary,

and we are all very excited to start this new endeavor and share Jonah’s

story with all of you. We are hopeful that this documentary will help other

families find ways to put together alternative programs for their children

and also show politicians that our children can make tremendous progress

when they receive the appropriate support and services throughout their

ENTIRE day, not just minimally after school.

The title of the documentary is “Jonah and His Whale.” We have the start of
