Day 2. Advanced topics in the treatment of Severe Behavior

Disorders.

About the presenter: Iwata received his Ph.D. in Psychology

from Florida State University and is currently Research Foundation

Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of Florida,

Director of the Florida Center on Self-Injury, and Co-Director of

the University of Florida Autism Program. He has held faculty

appointments previously at the s Hopkins University School of

Medicine and Western Michigan University. His primary areas of

interest are applied behavior analysis, developmental disabilities,

functional analysis of severe behavior disorders, and program

evaluation. He has published over 175 articles and chapters on these

topics, and he has received over $4 million in research grants to

support that work. 's work has focused on almost every

behavioral aspect of developmental disabilities, including

behavioral acquisition (ranging from basic skills training to

community preparation), eating disorders, self-injurious and

aggressive behavior, and staff management. In addition to conducting

research and directing programs in these areas, he has served as an

expert consultant at the individual, institutional, and state-wide

level. Much of 's research has focused on the functional

analysis of severe behavior disorders. This approach to assessment

and treatment is one of the most significant advancements in

behavior analysis over the past 20 years and is now considered the

standard in the field for both clinical research and practice.

has published more articles in the Journal of Applied Behavior

Analysis than any other author.

Two-day Special Education Law & Advocacy Boot Camps

Topic Description: 2 days , overall (12 hours) are more intensive

and personalized. Participants have opportunities to network. In a

slaw Boot Camp, you learn how to use special education

statutes and regulations to get answers to your questions; to use

tests and measurements to measure educational progress; chart out

test scores; write SMART IEPs goals and objectives; create paper

trails; write effective letters, and use advocacy strategies to

negotiate for appropriate special education programs.

Sample Agenda: Changes in IDEA 2004 including: New requirements for

intial evaluations, reevaluations and parental consent - New

Requirements for IEPs, IEP goals, IEP teams, IEP meetingss - New

Eligibility issues for students with specific learning disabilities -

New Procedural requirements and timelines, including the " Due

Process Complaint Notice " and " Resolution (IEP) Session "

Participants will learn about requirements in No child LEft behind

including: Reading and research based instruction - Highly qualified

teachers - Parental rights and options - High stakes testing

Participants will also learn how to: Use tests and measurments to

measure progress - Write SMART IEPS - Use tactics and strategies for

effective advocacy
