INTEGRATING APPLIED BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS AND SPEECH PATHOLOGY: A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS The use of applied behavior analysis as a model for intervention has been shown to be one of the most effective strategies to promote best outcomes for children with autism. One key component of an effective behavioral program is consistency. It is important for all members of the team to work together toward a common goal. Because deficits in speech and language are so prominent in children with autism, collaboration between the behavior analyst and the speech-language pathologist is crucial. Unfortunately, parents and professionals find this team approach easier said then done. This presentation will provide an overview of the differences that often underlie the potential conflict between behavior analysis and speech-language pathology. In turn, strategies to promote effective collaboration will be discussed.
