that can be implemented in a classroom environment. Teaching strategies that

promote skill acquisition across a variety of curriculum domains will be

in

the classroom will be outlined. Particular attention will be paid to designing

One core area of deficit for students with autism is the area of

socialization. This workshop will focus on language-based assessment and the

that can be used to enhance student’s existing conversation skills.

3. INTEGRATING APPLIED BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS AND SPEECH PATHOLOGY: A

COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS

The use of applied behavior analysis as a model for intervention has been

shown to be one of the most effective strategies to promote best outcomes for

children with autism. One key component of an effective behavioral program is

consistency. It is important for all members of the team to work together

toward a common goal. Because deficits in speech and language are so prominent

in

children with autism, collaboration between the behavior analyst and the

speech-language pathologist is crucial. Unfortunately, parents and

professionals

find this team approach easier said then done. This presentation will provide

an overview of the differences that often underlie the potential conflict

between behavior analysis and speech-language pathology. In turn, strategies to

promote effective collaboration will be discussed.

Thursday, April 26, 2007 • 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Location: Four Points by Sheraton, 333 South Service Road

4. behavior management

The focus of this workshop is to highlight important assessment

considerations when addressing the challenging behaviors of learners with autism

spectrum

disorders. Attendees are provided with a myriad of assessment tools and data

collection to guide them in understanding the functions of challenging

behaviors, along with guidelines regarding how to select tools based upon a

particular

case. These tools and strategies are discussed with respect to the

subsequent development of comprehensive, individually-tailored, behavioral

interventions. Topics including data collection, reinforcement principles,

functional

assessment, planning for generalization, development of the behavior

intervention

plan and overcoming common obstacles are discussed.
