Jeanne, we use things for targets...........fruit loops work well

colorful we also just wad up some tissues and I let our son do this and cheer

him when he hits the target! Good luck! M-C

This reminds me of my 7yr old SO much. He was potty trained at 3, but he

still absolutly refuses to hold himself when he goes. Most of the time he has

decent aim & makes the toilet but as he's growing it's getting harder to hit a

target that is further away (at 43 inches it was much easier to reach the

toilet w/out holding himself than it is at 52 inches). Can he reach the toilet

at all standing w/o a stool? Being closer to it was a definate benefit for

. This may not be a good idea now because you are trying to train

him, it could make him not want to use the potty, but we have always had

help us clean up when he missed the toilet (even when he was

training we

did-it was good training for the future!!) I buy Lysol or Clorox wipes and help

him out. I don't know if this could be a sensory issue, doesn't

have any sensory issues, he has behavioral & neurobiological problems & I've

always related them to that.

But here is my problem will not hold it to

aim or let anyone help him. So now he wants to stand to go and we now for

the

last week have had a puddle on the floor.

Up until about a month ago my 4 1/2 yr old son would not hold himself

either to pee (due to the sensory issues), and so he always just went

sitting down. Recently he seems to want to stand and I've been reminding

him to 'hold it, pee down into the water!' and usually he'll do

it. Sometimes it makes a bit of a mess but at least he's trying. I made a

big deal about how he is standing up like the other big boys at school

etc. I don't know what made him want to do it, one day he just felt like

trying!

I am glad to hear that is not the only boy who has this problem. He is

doing good as far as aiming and hitting the toilet so far. He has only missed

once but I am not sure why he with his grandmother who helped him she is

helping me train him since we are always at her house and we live in the same

apartment building but in two different ones on two different floors. is

only

41 inches tall so he is not tall enough not to use a footstool yet. But I do

keep the lysol can right by the potty so it is handy. He is doing good with

training. He is finally getting the idea. Now to gain the control. Yesterday he

went got his stoll and went pee standing by himself w/o help. Yes I was so

happy I made a huge deal about it. So far he thinks standing is just great. Now

every time he wants to stand to go. He even knows he has to sit for the other.

He is hopefully on the road to being trained. I have not even attempted the

public training yet. I just put him in a pullup and bring extras with me. If I

am gone a long time I put him in a diaper or in the car for a long time in

one. gets scared when in a public restroom because he is terrified of the

electric hand dryers when they run. He has sensory issues he becomes unglued

with them. So I have a hard time to even keep him in there to be changed . He

is getting better though. It is going to be awhile for that still. I am not

sure how he is going to do at school in three weeks. I know I will have to

provide a ring and a stool for him. Which has already been discussed last year.

Hi all

I attended a potty training workshop a few Saturdays ago, and we

started an intensive program for our 5 year old son on Thursday (so,

we just finished day 5).

I should tell you that we tried scheduled sittings all last summer

and this summer too.

He is nonverbal. He uses sign for food, swing, and other

reinforcers. He does not use PECS. We used a 3-D dollhouse potty

this summer to indicate it was time to go potty.

I have a few questions. If anyone has any advice, I'd appreciate

it. We are making progress and moving in the right direction, but I

need a little help.

Based on the presentation at the workshop, he has worked up to

sitting on a chair by the door (4-5 feet away from the toilet) for 20

minutes with a 25 minute break if he goes. All day long, he usually

goes immediately after the 25 minute break, which means he gets

another break. I am not prompting him after the break, except to

say " break is over " and he hears the beeper go off. I e-mailed the

presenter, and she told me to just keep upping the break time amount

and keep moving the chair further away (and make sure more accidents

are not occuring). He is initiating " in spirit " but he does not tell

me when he needs to go (he is being prompted by me saying " break is

over " and/or the timer??)

Same thing in the restroom. If he is sitting on the chair for the 20

minutes and has to go, he gets real antsy and stands up, but then he

is waiting for me to say " do you have to go potty? " before he will

walk to the potty. How do I transfer that to him independently

walking to the potty? Other times, he will independently walk over

to the potty and stand and go.

I might just try to move the chair outside the door and see what

happens tomorrow. I just want to move past him only going

when " break is over " or the timer goes off.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Holly
