Guest guest
Hi a, I've had Hep C 40+ yrs. I chose not to treat---my age at diagnosis (64)and that my disease had not progressed rapidly. I am going to be 74 this month. But, the disease seems to do what it wants and how it wants and affects different people differently. There is a very good online book concerning Hep C that has a great chapter on nutritional supplements Chapter 16. http://www.hepcchallenge.org/choices/supplements.htm I have started with the supplements and am feeling better--not that I felt really bad before--just old and tired a lot. I vow to stay faithful to my supplements for a year and celebrate my 75th birthday with another biopsy. My supplements cost around $70.00 a month for everything. I do not take herbs except milk thistle---some are dangerous. I take vitamins and anti-oxidants. I just read an article on the net about an herb supplement that had more fatalities than if you took nothing. I cannot name the name, but, as with others, will share the info if you email direct. I need to look up that article and post it. There are some new treatments coming up that seem to have less side effects and better results than the current treatment. Doctors often do not read the many articles out there concerning new treatment and alternative treatment. The choice to treat or not treat is yours and your doc will not be the one going thru the side effects and there is no guarantee that you can complete treatment or will reach SVR or will not relapse. It is an individual choice that each of us must make and the more info you have, the more informed choice you can make. The disease is slow moving normally---and, of course, NO alcohol. I, also, ask about ANY prescribed med that I take to see if it will affect my liver and have for years. I only take the supplements as I do not seem to have any other disease. Hope this helps SuziQ Quinn In the swamp in secluded recesses, a shy and hidden bird is warbling a song. Walt Whitman
Guest guest
Great post, , thank you for sharing those thoughts. The research is certainly out there.. As a disclaimer, I must say that Supplements can NOT cure, only conventional treatment or spontaneity can help one to reach SVR., but it seems for some, they can and do keep their dragon in check for a time. Quality of life can be improved in some, while they decide on treatment, but if you do go that way, also always best to stay under the care of a MD. I am doing both. while I wait for the new treatment that's in Phase 3 clinical trials. IF you have the option of waiting, it may be approved by 2011. If you do not, may be best to try now.. Treatment does take a big strain off of your liver for a time, whether your reach SVR, or not, Be Well, Sheena Hi a, I've had Hep C 40+ yrs. Guest guest
Hi Ro Welcome to the group. This is a great place to get information. I sometimes think we all live on the computer looking for the answer and I don't think there is one answer. I think how you decide to treat yourself comes down to each individual, how the disease is affecting your life, your situation, family, friends, finances heck your whole life and what you want. I too have a daughter and that is my main concern, to see her grow into an adult that can survive this world and get out of it what she wants and deserves. Mine is almost there. Well I think so most the time. I've never been one for doctors and now I've got 3. a gi specialist, my primary and a naturopath. I've changed my life style, eating habits and stress levels. And I am still working on these. I think you just need to keep moving forward. I find the most up to date info or links to here. You can ask any question to the group that you are wondering about. I get armed here with info and questions which I bring to my doctor before making any decisions. I have not treated but I did not have to make that choice so cannot help you there. Glad you found this group and welcome. Debbie

Guest guest
Hello everyone. My name is Shana. I have four kids and my oldest who is 9 has OCD. His rituals are making the entire family crazy and I just want to help him. It seems his OCD has gotten better over the last year, but it still interfers with life. His rituals include: going in and out of doors the exact same way everytime, going around people in a certain order, only wearing certain socks and even those sometimes bug him. He's picky about his shoes. And he will only wear athletic pants with certain pockets. The clothes thing is driving me crazy because it seems like everything I buy for him he won't wear. It also makes him late for school because he has a hard time getting dressed in the morning. He hoards things, has number rituals, good and bad numbers. It seems like his brain never shuts off. I'm sure there are many more that I can't think of right now. My husband and I first just thought he was being defiant until we realized that something else was going on. He was seeing a mental health specialist but she really wasn't helping so we stopped going. I know he needs some kind of help before he goes crazy or we do. Any advice would be appreciated. Guest guest
HI Shana... welcome  My daughter was diagnosed last August and we are still learning to navigate this stuff! This group has been a life saver for me. There are many knowledgeable parents here.  These two books also helped me in the beginning to understand OCD, the right treatment and also what I should be doing:  What to do when your Child has Obsessive-Compulsiv e Disorder by Aureen Pinto Wagner Ph.D. Freeing Your Child from Obsessive-Compulsiv e Disorder by Tamar E. Guest guest
Welcome, Shana. So glad you found us. Finding the right therapist, one who specializes in the treatment of OCD using CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) and ERP (exposure and response prevention) can be difficult, but worth it. It helped our son tremendously. Our son went to therapists for years, who didn't know how to treat OCD, but said, and I suppose even thought, they did. It wasted a lot of time and money. But once we found someone who understood OCD, and how to treat it correctly, we've had success for the first time. That coupled with medication (because our son's anxiety was so high he could not concentrate to do therapy, at first) gave our son his life back. Our son also had the sensitivity with clothing, for years. Everything had to be soft cotton and tag free. I finally found tag free underwear he could tolerate. Socks and shoes were tougher, but he finally adjusted. He lived in sweats for year. I often found something he could tolerate, then bought that same item of clothing over and over, over time, until it was usually discontinued. He couldn't tolerate jeans for years. Just the last few month, he finally was able to wear them (he's now 16). What a relief that was, because sweats are sometimes not appropriate. Anyway, didn't mean to write a novel. lol Just wanted to share that you are not alone. There are many here who understand what you are experiencing. It can make the entire family crazy, to live with OCD. Our poor kids are at the mercy of it, doing rituals to try to appease what OCD wants, so they can have some relief. Jump right in with any specific questions. I'm sure you'll get lots of replies. ) It's a helpful bunch here. BJ > > Hello everyone. My name is Shana.
