Guest guest
Navigating the Spectrum Providing Direction and Support to Families of Children on the Autism Spectrum January – Lecture Series: Advancing Peer, Play and Social Skills Play is much more than simply a fun way to occupy leisure time. It is a necessary precursor to language, social, cognitive and adaptive skills, and an effective way to decrease behavioral anomalies. Unfortunately, many of the core deficits of autism such as rigid thinking, aversion to change, repetitive behaviors, restricted interests and difficulties with perspective taking prevent children on the spectrum from acquiring fundamental play skills. Additionally, most intervention programs address play and social skills from either a behavioral or developmental perspective, when both approaches are necessary to promote the child’s optimal development. Parents, educators and therapists are invited to join us for an interactive lecture series, consisting of video and hands-on demonstrations and active participant practice, designed to advance your child’s play, peer and social skills. Participants will be given “assignments” each week to practice the topics covered. Module 1 – The Importance of Play: Understand the stages of play and its impact on other areas of development. Participants will be able to discuss their child’s current level of play and social skills and outline individual goals for the series. January 3 Module 2 – Play and ABA: How to teach the “rules” of play such as turn-taking, following structured and rule-based games, and peer modeling using an Applied Behavior Analysis approach. January 10 Module 3 – Play and RDI: How to further interactive and social play and encourage peer enjoyment using a Relationship Development Intervention approach. January 17 Module 4 – Playing with Peers: How to facilitate play in school, at home with siblings, and in the community among peers. January 24 Module 5 – Applying the Principles: Review and discussion of individual goals and implementation techniques. Participants who attended all five modules will create specifically tailored play and social skills goals and strategies to address these areas. January 31 Presented by Alisa Dror, PhD, BCBA, Certified RDI Consultant 7 – 9 pm at the Greenville Community Church, 270 Ardsley Road, Scarsdale, NY Members – Free / Non-Members – $25 per Module or $100 for all 5 Modules Limited to 25 Participants – Please Reserve Early February – Workshop: The Family’s Role in Interventions The cornerstone of any successful intervention protocol is the child’s family. In order for any therapy to be effective, the child’s parents must be integral and informed participants, as knowledgeable about the method of intervention and as able to implement it as any member of the therapy team. Intervention that lasts only as long as a therapist’s session will never have the same impact as intervention that continues long after the therapist’s work is done. This workshop is designed to provide participants with a general overview of the most effective therapeutic options available and how they can be successfully incorporated into the family’s lifestyle. There will be breakout sessions throughout the day to give participants the opportunity to discuss child-specific issues with the presenters. Topics to be covered include: Overview of Family-based Interventions: Understand how to implement family-supported interventions such as Relationship Development Intervention, Floortime and Biomedical Approaches. Generalization and Maintenance of School- and Center-based Interventions: Learn how to maximize the effects of Applied Behavior Analysis and Speech-Language and Occupational Therapies. Effective Advocacy: Discover how to secure an effective intervention plan for your child by learning what your child’s rights are under special education laws; Family Management: Discuss strategies for how to balance providing for the many needs of your child on the spectrum without sacrificing your other family, relationship and personal commitments. Various Presenters Friday February 15th at the Greenville Community Church, 270 Ardsley Road, Scarsdale, NY 8:30 am to 5:00 pm – Registration begins 8:00 – Lunch Included This Is a Free Event – Limited to 50 Participants – Please Reserve Early For more info or to reserve attendance please contact Navigating the Spectrum (914) 826-5300 www.navigatingthespectrum.org info@... --------------------------------- Never miss a thing.
