Promoting Functional Communication in Children

With Autism and Development Delays

Many Children with Autism and other development disabilities live

with little or no verbal skills. The inability to communicate even

basic requests creates a high level of frustration and can lead to

many challenging behaviors, including self-stimulatory and self-

injurious behavior. This seminar shines a spot light on the

challenges in working with these children and provides strategies to

teach outside-the-box to reduce problem behavior during teaching,

promote functional communication and increase early vocal skills in

this population. Building on current treatment methods from the

field of Speech Pathology as viewed through the eyes of a behavior

analyst, this workshop provides real world examples of practical and

easily implemented interventions that can be applied across

contexts.

About the Speaker: Tamara Kasper, MS, CCC-SLP, BCBA has practiced as

a pediatric speech-language pathologist with emphasis on treatment of

children with challenging behaviors for the past 16 years. She has

specialized in the treatment of children with autism for the last 10

years. Her commitment to the children she serves led her to pursue

treatment methods outside the field of speech-language pathology.

Under the mentorship of Dr. Vince Carbone, Ms.Kasper became a Board

Certified Behavioral Analyst. She has advanced training in Applied

Behavioral Analysis(ABA) with emphasis on Skinner's analysis of

verbal behavior, Greenspan's approach, Kaufman strategies fro apraxia

of speech and PROMPT. Currently, Ms. Kasper provides consulting

services to treatment teams who serve children with autism in the

U.S., Canada and Europe. Her comprehensive knowledge of current

practices and proficiency in multiple frameworks provide her with a

unique opportunity to combine elements of several approaches to gain

cooperation and promote functional communication in children with

autism and other developmental disabilities.
