Even in the absence of oral-motor weakness many of these individuals cannot effectively communicate verbally. Advances in the process of differential diagnosis have identified many of these individuals as having apraxia of speech. Incorporating specific intervention techniques that include the progression of word approximations toward target words ( Kaufman's Program) and modifications of the Kaufman Approach specific to individuals with autism (Tamara Kasper's Approach) have been found to be effective in improving speech intelligibility and functional communication in this population. This seminar will explain in detail how to implement the Kaufman and Kasper Approaches to improving verbal communication in children with developmental disabilities. Participants will learn how to systematically introduce motivators to encourage verbal communication, cuing and shaping techniques to improve speech intelligibility, and timing and rationale of fading cuing and shaping techniques. The ultimate goal of this seminar is to help individuals with developmental disabilities become functional and independent in verbal communication.
