With six days to go before I head overseas I have not had the time to post,

but I have been reading all the messages I get while I am at work. I used

to think we were so lucky to have my Mom stable and in a great place just a

few minutes from my parent's house. But, my Mom being hospitalized last

week was a major dose of reality of how unpredictable this horrible disease

is. It breaks my heart to know that I am not there, and even worse that I

have to head overseas for three months. But, I will count down the days

until I get home and be with my family again. I thank God that I have such

great sister-in-laws to take care of my Mom and my Dad, I don't know what I

would do without them.

Every time I read your posts Sandie it just amazes me how similar his

progression sounds like my Mom. I can say that I have found comfort in

knowing that there are (sadly) many of us out there that are confronted with

the same heartaches, frustrations and experiences. Thank you for being such

a great support to me. Hopefully our e-mail server will stay up most of the

time we are at sea so I can keep up on the posts. My thoughts and prayers

will be with you all.

Sandie,

Personal emails would be most welcomed. I was actually going to ask if I

could email you directly if something came up that I would like to have

posted.

I really don't want to lose touch with the group.

Going to see how things go in the next few weeks.

Thanks!

Hugs to you,

Mariea

In answer to the rigid arm movements:

My mother is basically inmobil from LBD. She can not do anything for herself.

Before this stage, she was very rigid and difficult to move or dress. She would

do the opposite of what you would need her to do. For example if you needed her

to bend her arm to put in an armhole she would straighen it. If she was aware

that you were getting ready to move her from from the bed to the wheel chair,

she would lay back down and become rigid and not sit up to help in the

transport. It was so difficult to understand until we learned of the diagnosis

and could see the correlation. In my opinion this is another sign of advancing

LBD symptons. My other is a little easier know to care for in some ways. It

seems if

she trys to help with movement she fights it. She does not

try to help at all anymore which in someways is easier.

Good luck.

My sympathies for all those who have lost their loved ones in the last month. I

am reading and know that I am not far behind. As I fed my mother yesterday I

could not help but

notice how much more difficult swallowing is for her. She

has to concentrate with closed eyes and count to be able to

urinate in the toliet. Sometimes she does not notice that she has urinated in

the bed or chair. I about dropped her in

the bathroom as her legs became crossed as I tried to transfer her to the

wheelchair from the toliet and we both

about went down. My dad could not hear me yell for him

because he was listening to the Missouri vs Iowa State game. (If anyone listened

to it you will understand why!)

This event was upsetting for both of us. She got down to her

knees but I knew if she got down to the floor we would have a terrible time.

Somehow I got her into the chair but oh my...! She is only 80 plus pounds yet

so heavy as dead weight. She is so slight and twisted that you don't know what

to grab without hurting her. The event still bothers me.

I hope mom has forgotten it. Colleen from Missouri

Hello Group,

It's been awhile since I have been able to post. I have been trying

to keep up with the postings.

I want to offer my sympathies to Sally, Donna and . Please

forgive me if I've missed someone. I admire all of you, including

Sandie, for continuing with the group. What you have to share is

invaluable.

Now for my update. I started back to work the end of September. I

took CNA training through the NH Mom is at. Back in the beginning of

the year I was accepted in to Nursing school (LPN). Back then Mom

was living with me and we had it planned how we would work caring for

Mom and my school schedule. But then everything changed. So inorder

to work, go to school and continue to care for Mom, my solution was

to start working at her NH. This way I can see her on a regular

basis and stay on top of her care.

School starts this Tuesday and I know I will be busier then ever.

I had posted sometime back that I was concerned for my sister. She

was to come out and visit and hadn't seen Mom since the Christmas

Holidays and that Mom had changed so much since then. came out

in mid October. And I had an answer to prayers. Mom was so on while

she was here visiting. The first day she saw Mom she went back out

to the car and Mom said to me, " When comes back I want to ask

her something. " I was so happy that she recognized my sister and

even was able to call her by name. Now granted by the time my sister

came back in a few minutes later Mom didn't recall that she wanted to

ask her something, but just the fact that she knew was there

was enough for me.

Mom is still in there!

I have a question. Mom's right arm tends to become rigid from time

to time. It can be rigid and then a few minutes later she is moving

it. Then there are times when it stays rigid. I'm assuming this is

the Parkinson's side of Lewy. Has anyone else experienced this with

there LO?

I don't think I will be able to keep up with the group after school

starts this week. I have been having trouble keeping up to the post

as is. I'm going to see what happens in the next few weeks.

Prayers to all.

I have missed seeing you in here. If you are unable to keep us with the

group, would it be all right to send personal emails?

I don't remember my dads arm being rigid, yet do know he had one side

more dominant than the other. Just setting here, I feel blank in trying

to remember which was which....hmmm.

Seems to me his left side functioned better, leaving the right leg and

foot lacking. I do know his left had was usually outstretched as if he

was always losing his balance and his right hand was clenched with thumb

very close to fingers. The last 10 days or so, both hands were held in

the clenched position and he was more rigid than ever.

My heart was warmed by the thought of you working in the NH where your

mom lives. Talk about an answer to a prayer. What a very wonderful

idea. If you can, please just pop into the group and briefly let us

know how you are and how your mom is.

I continue to keep you and your mom in my prayers. Also, you are so

right that a prayer was answered that when your sister visited, your mom

was doing well. As the saying goes, God works in mysterious ways.

Hugs!!

Keep up the good work of caring for your mom. Know you are not being

judged for what you " almost " did in almost dropping your mom, but for

the care you gave in getting her to and from the bathroom. My dad also

had a terrible time swallowing toward the end. He would " pool " the food

in his mouth and just wouldn't swallow. Even liquids became a problem.

I feel that is why he chose not to eat...then he would clench his jaws,

and turn his head away. Didn't take long to realize what he was doing.

I pray for the utmost strength and courage for you as you go through

this time with your mom. Praying for God to wrap his arms around you so

you know you are not alone.

Thanks for the comments. I don't reply much but know there are a number of us

out here listening and learning.

It is so interesting to see the similarities and share with

others what I have learned here.

As you described it, she is pooling food in her mouth and is not swallowing

unless you direct her to. There are stains on

the bed sheets where she rests after lunch -where food or medicines drool out of

her mouth.

Are others as worried about following our loved one with us

suffering this disease as I am? It makes a case for nursing home insurance

doesn't it! Thanks - Colleen

Okay, that does it! I am actually going to put in the paperwork so

I can go to the meeting in March. I have been working late forever.

So far I can go to the meeting next week, too. My partner was

making noise about trading with me so he can get off early, but I

told him no way! lol
