Hi,

I had posted this link about Nutritional Supplementation a couple of weeks ago - it's a great site, as it provides important info about the liver, etc - the whole site has valuable info too!

http://www.hepcchallenge.org/choices/supplements.htm

This link has more about each supplement:

http://www.holisticonline.com/cancer/cancer_nat-rem-home.htm

The B vitamins and folate are essential too for red blood cells while vitamin C and co-q10 is mentioned for maintaining while blood cell levels.

Others might have more to add to this.

Good luck!

Chris

folic acidb ( What my doctor put me on prior to treatment and during )

Vitamin of the B complex. It is found in liver, legumes and green leafy vegetables, and whole grain foods, and is also synthesized by the intestinal bacteria. It is essential for growth, and plays many other roles in the body. Lack of folic acid causes anaemia because it is necessary for the synthesis of nucleic acids and the formation of red blood cells.

Great link to all the supplements and info on studies done on these supplements. I'll print it up and can use it regularly. There is a lot that we can do to help ourselves with or without tx. and during tx. Lots of doctors just don't have the time or inclination to read all the info available . Unfortunately, until a really great tx is found, it is a lot of "do it yourself" and we can prevent a lot of liver damage by finding the info ourselves. I always find your info very helpful and up to date. Thanks so much for sharing your research with us.

I'll print a copy for my doctor---but no guarantee that he will look at it. The neurologist I had refused to even put a copy of Dr. Berkson in my medical file. Wonder if they minor in arrogance in medical school? Noticed in another post that you started whey protein and I had just started it too. I knew my protein intake was too low. I really like it. There is a brand sweetened with stevia on the internet. I haven't tried it yet.

Thanks again for keeping us up to date on supplements.

Folic Acid was being pushed up till a few

years ago for cardiac health…..I had been prescribed it by my

cardiologist, but they changed that a few years ago (like everything else, what

is good one day is not good the next.)

However, I just read an article in the

June issue of Nutrition Action, a publication by the Center for Science in the

Public Interest, about picking multivitamins.

The recommendation for folic acid is no

more than 400 mcg per day, but most of us also receive that much and more in

breakfast cereals, etc. There is speculation that folic acid can cause

tumors to grow:

“….researchers worry that

folic acid may be a double-edged sword: getting enough may keep tumors from

starting by repairing errors in DNA, but getting too much may feed tumors once

they start. If a tumor that’s already initiated is supplied with

folic acid on a daily basis, that may promote the tumor’s growth.”

They recommend that men or postmenopausal

women take a multi-vitamin every other day instead of every day; premenopausal

women should take a multi every day to lower the risk of neural tube birth

defects which can occur before women know they’re pregnant; everyone

should avoid cereals, energy bars and other foods fortified with a day’s

worth of folic acid if they do take a multi.

Just “food for thought”

Dorothy

Folate is a b vitamin and is important for cellular production.

I have a genetic defect that helps regulate homocysteine and am on prescription folate and b-12. My last red blood cell tests were still off so my doc recommended that I also take b complex as well as quick dissolve b12/folate tabs.

Dorothy, this site has the article that you were referring to "Folic Acid Doesn't Help the Heart" - it also has lots more info about folate/folic acid.

In some individuals, too much folate could be a problem. Most folks are deficient:

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/folicacid.html

Thanks!

Chris

f I remember correctly, it was being prescribed by cardiologists to help lower homocysteine which is believed to cause heart problems. I don’t recall why they reversed that theory though, but I’m sure you’ll come across it if you start reading about it.Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars.

The recommendations wouldn’t apply

to someone undergoing medical treatment I’m sure. There must have been a

specific reason you needed it. I wonder.

I do know that the earlier thinking re

benefits of folic acid was reversed. My cardiologist had been prescribing it

for me as a daily supplement, but when I saw him several years ago and asked

for a renewal, he said, “Oh, no….we don’t prescribe that

anymore. In fact, there has been evidence of it doing more harm than good.”

I felt like saying, well thanks……guess it’s a good thing I’m

still sitting here to ask about it!

What surprised me when I read the article

was that exceeding the 400 mcg per day could be a problem. Most cereals and

many other products are fortified with folic acid and I just figured that was a

good thing. I have started taking my multi every other day now – at least

till I read something else!

No doubt that condition warranted the

additional folic acid.

And I hope your doctor has a good enough

explanation for you……!!

unfortunately, you have to be VERY careful with herbs and supplements while on treatment. Milk thistle is safe and can help your liver to tolerate tx better and is a natural anti-inflammatory. You need to talk with your doc about anything else. I know that real 'wheatgrass' can help with the red blood cells.. but please be careful with anything that has iron in it because iron is really bad for our livers, our hearts and lots of doc's just RX iron when we get anemic without checking the ferritin levels.. so make sure your doc checks your ferritin level before rx'ing any iron products.. they can totally ruin your chances of SVR on tx....JackieFrom: sunbeltcity

I had a huge argument with him that time, he said either take it or he was stopping treatment, next blood work proved him more than wrong. I am SOooo glad to be

away from that medical group..A wonder either myself or my husband survived..

It was sure high AFTER he started the iron pills..455, then went higher

next test. it never did stabilize my blood counts and he refused to give me

Procrit, though my Insurance covered the cost..
