Pointing when desire is strong

My son has been doing really good with vocalizing and will repeat

anything you'll say if he doesn't understand. However, when he just

wants to go to his favorite activity (such as going to car or ask for

vacuum) he has started to point in the direction and act as if he

doesn't have speech. Any idea on how to work around this?
