February – Workshop: The Family’s Role in Interventions

The cornerstone of any successful intervention protocol is the child’s family.

In order for any therapy to be effective, the child’s parents must be integral

and informed participants, as knowledgeable about the method of intervention and

as able to implement it as any member of the therapy team. Intervention that

lasts only as long as a therapist’s session will never have the same impact as

intervention that continues long after the therapist’s work is done. This

workshop is designed to provide participants with a general overview of the most

effective therapeutic options available and how they can be successfully

incorporated into the family’s lifestyle. There will be breakout sessions

throughout the day to give participants the opportunity to discuss

child-specific issues with the presenters. Topics to be covered include:

Overview of Family-based Interventions: Understand how to implement

family-supported interventions such as Relationship Development Intervention,

Floortime and Biomedical Approaches.

Generalization and Maintenance of School- and Center-based Interventions:

Learn how to maximize the effects of Applied Behavior Analysis and

Speech-Language and Occupational Therapies.

Effective Advocacy: Discover how to secure an effective intervention plan for

your child by learning what your child’s rights are under special education

laws;

Family Management: Discuss strategies for how to balance providing for the

many needs of your child on the spectrum without sacrificing your other family,

relationship and personal commitments.
