Guest guest
We have the opportunity to move to the Atlanta area and have a 9 year old son with Autism and a 6 yr. old NT child. I'd appreciate any feedback parents/professionals can offer with regards to the types of services available in the Atlanta area. Our son is verbal but continues to struggle with spontaneous use of language and the use of language for social/relationship purposes. He has significant sensory integration difficulties. He has made great progress with his current program and we'd like to continue the same type of programming. We are currently doing an Applied Verbal Behavior (VB) home program approx. 15-20 hours per week with a heavy emphasis on natural environment training but also including intensive teaching sessions. He also attends a self contained cross categorical public school classroom 3 half days and two full days each week. We would like more inclusion/social opportunities with NT peers. He currently requires a shadow to attend inclusion activities such as music, PE, library and assemblies. He gets two 30 min sessions of speech and two 30 min sessions of OT at school as well as adaptive PE and participation in Special Olympics. In addition he gets two 45 min sessions of private speech (VB/social) and two 45 min session of private OT (therapeutic listening/sensory integration) each week. We currently work with a consultant but provide much training and supervision ourselves. We are happy with our current services and want to make sure we will be able to access similar or better services in Atlanta to factor into our decision making process. Any information you could provide on both public school districts/programs and private resources (schools, therapists, ABA consultants etc.) would be greatly appreciated! We are checking into the following resources and would appreciate a private e-mail (goldcarin@...) if you have any specific information to share: Reinforcement Unlimited Emroy Autism Institute Decater City Schools Alpharetta (sp?)Public Schools Amit Program (in coordination with the Academy) The School The Hirsch Academy Thanks!
