Guest guest
This is great news!!!!!! I think it’s a way for y’all to communicate about it without any emotion involved at first and that’s why it’s working. He knows you’re on his side and you’re researching, but you’re gonna let him digest it in his own time. You might send him an email that says you have some resources and if he has a question, you can get the answer, but you still don’t have to talk about it until he’s ready. I’m glad you found us and we are helping you. We love you, girl! Making Some Headway With Hubby I am very new to this, and I am reading all the posts, and doing as much research as I can. The majority of my posts will probably be questions instead of reponses to posts. But I want you all to know whether you are the one with the disease or the caregiver I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers. As I told you in my first post, my hubby refuses to talk to me about all of this, and he gets angry if I mention anything about it to him. Well, I figured out, I can email stuff to him, and it doesn't bother him. Next week after his ultrasound, I will send him the link to this group. But for now, I am emailing him something about HCV everyday. Yesterday, I emailed him some information you all posted about supplements and iron...and diet. Well, when he came in for lunch yesterday, before he took his vitamins, he came to me and told me " look, there is no iron in these vitamins " . And then he asked me if I knew about one of the other ingredients that was listed. My only response was " That's good about the iron, and I know what all else is listed because I've already checked the label " I didn't say anything else, and just went about my business. But I feel like we took a step forward in the communication area. Today, I am going to send him the list of " Foods that make the liver happy " that sent to me. And I am going to send him the link to article that starts off " Being Detected With HCV Is NOT a Death Sentence " I know now for sure, he is reading what I sent, and he is not getting upset with me for sending them to him. I'm sure it's going to be up and down until we know exactly where he stands with this, but I know we'll have the support we need from this group. Thanks again for being here. Guest guest
Biopsies in the US don’t usually take as long as in Canada where Gail is – mine didn’t anyway. RE: Making Some Headway With Hubby It sounds to me like he is scared but with you sending him stuff he is learning. The ultra sound he is getting is to determine if his liver is enlarged. That is about all it can do.When he gets to a specialist he should be given a biopsy. They take a pinch of your liver out and check it to make sure they know what kind of damage your liver has.It is the only way to get the real picture of how the liver is and how fast he should be treated.I have had two liver biopsies and when I get to the specilist I will be asking for another one.I might take up to six months to get to the specilist, cause they are usually booked pretty solid.Pic up some crystal light packages and try to get your husband used to drinking more water. He needs about a gallon of water a day, whether it be juice, water, etc.Coffee doesn't count. It will reduce the sides of treatment and will also help with the hep to reduce some of the toxins produced by the disease.Your being smart and so is your husband. Guest guest
I'm so happy for you and your husband, he will come around at his own pace. Everybody deals differently and we have to accept how they deal. One may be slower than the other. He needs your help now and will in the future. So learn as much as you can I have done a lot of research and my boyfriend has come to count on me for the knowledge and he listens to me. Most of what I get is from this site. And he has a wonderful doctor in Southern CA.... He has actually had to lower his dosage as of yesterday i'm curious what the group thinks about that. He was taking three rib in the am and three @ night. And a full shot, now he takes two pills in the am and two at night and does 1/2 a shot. Doc says even w/ lowing people do clear. He is Genotype 1. He hasn't been able to function at all. Has not done well w/ the side effects. 4 more weeks he does his first viral load check. One day at a time it seems. One day at a time...... Guest guest
Hi Patty, My hubby is 53. He just learned last week that he is HCV positive.. He's probably had it for at least 20 years...I just realized ( which now has me back to feeling afraid), it's probably longer than that, because for the past 20 years he's done nothing that would have exposed him to the virus. Guest guest
Any non-carbonated low or no sugar fluids without caffeine count. Water, crystal light (but Wal-Mart brand is cheaper) to add flavor if the plain water gets boring, propel, etc. I’m not familiar with the Gatorade AM – what is the AM part? I don’t know about the missing spleen. Have him start a list of questions for the specialist and put that on it. Re: Making Some Headway With Hubby Hi Gail, He is scared; he's made a few comments lately when I've been forgetful about things, such as I'll have to learn to remember things for myself. What does an enlarged liver indicate other than he has some type of liver disease? He does drink alot of gatorade and water. Does the gatorade count? He likes only the Gatorade AM, Tropical Mango. I'll send him an email about drinking alot of water. The way I've been passing on some of this information to him is by cutting and pasting snippets from some of these messages.......I've been trying to pass on just positive stuff right now....I don't want him to dwell on the negative. By the way, his spleen was removed a long time ago; how does this affect his liver? FEM
Guest guest
FEM, my risk factors were 23-33 years ago and in 2003 my liver was stage 1/grade 2. Not much damage for that many years. Don’t be scared until you know what you’re dealing with. Patty Pooh had the exact same damage as me, but probably got hers much later 6-7 years ago when she was caring for her husband dying with it. It tends to progress faster the older you are when you get it. Re: Making Some Headway With Hubby Hi Patty, My hubby is 53. He just learned last week that he is HCV positive.. Guest guest
I agree, . I think the faster progression may be due to the fact that our immune systems get weeker as we get older. I didn't know that in GA when I decided to wait on treatment. I could have been done way before now. Guest guest
I was going to check the gatorade bottle for the ingredients in the AM, but we're out. When we get more, I'll check to see exactly what it is. I did see he had bought two 6 packs of Propel. By the way, I got the results of my bloodwork, and I'm clear. I knew I would be; I wasn't worried about it, but he was, so I did it. Guest guest
Jeff drinks Gaterade, it's actaully not that great...the kind we have does have high fructose corn syrup....it's not first in the ingrediants, but it's there. But Jeff does not like Crystal light or the other lightly flavored waters. But Gatorage does have Potassium and carbs in it....which he needs. He takes his vitamins, I try and give him healthy foods. But at this point w/ all the weight he has lost, the doc, said eat and drink what ever u want....within reason. Jeff drinks maybe a bottle a day, so it's not much and maybe he has some ginger ale for his stomach. Jeff has lost a lot of taste and appitites for foods since on treatment, sometimes all he has are delicious milk shakes, it's all he can keep down. But i put some protein in it along w/ flax seeds...It's better than nothing.... FEM wrote: I was going to check the gatorade bottle for the ingredients in the AM, but we're out. Guest guest
, sounds like he's having a rough time of it. I drink plain water all day. Not enough, but at least 1 ltr. per day. Tell him to nibble on saltine crackers to settle his stomache. Maybe that will help some.
