NAVIGATING THE SPECTRUM

Providing Direction and Support

to Families of Children on the Autism

Spectrum

August – Workshop: Reducing Problem Behaviors

Problem

behaviors almost always accompany a diagnosis on the autism spectrum and

seriously impact the child’s ability to progress through his or her

intervention plan.  Behaviors that are

inappropriate, disruptive or harmful to self and others are easy to recognize,

but more subtle behaviors also need to be addressed.  Caretakers often find

themselves overcompensating

for the child by eliminating even simple demands or taking care to avoid

situations that can escalate into problem behaviors. Inattentiveness, high

levels of aimless activity, whining, tantruming and an inability to comply with

commonplace demands interfere with learning and decrease opportunities to

participate in family and social activities. Dealing with these myriad of

behaviors can seem impossible, but they can be successfully managed through the

use of Applied Behavior Analysis.

Parents, therapists and educators are invited to learn effective

modification and reduction techniques that will address these behaviors and

increase the overall effectiveness of the child’s intervention plan.  Topics

to be covered include:

Overview of Applied Behavior Analysis: understand the

concepts of reinforcement, punishment, extinction and antecedent

manipulation, and how to apply these principles in everyday

situations;Understanding Behavior: learn the four categories

every behavior fits into, how each is maintained, how to conduct

functional assessments and analyses and how to use that information to

reduce problem behaviors;Behavioral Plans: discover how to address common

situations that evoke problem behaviors such as interruptions and

transitions, waiting and accepting no, as well as how to create

child-specific programs.  Learn how

to implement these programs across home, school and community

environments.
