EDEN II/GENESIS PROGRAMS ABA TRAINING WORKSHOP SERIES

These workshops are designed to offer training in the understanding and

implementation of applied behavior analysis (ABA) procedures for autism

spectrum disorder intervention. The workshop content is designed to

address topics related to intervention for young learners (early

intervention through preschool aged children) across the spectrum. A

certificate of workshop completion will be given. For more information or

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE

1. INTRODUCTION TO ABA

Joanne Sgambati, PhD

This workshop will provide attendees with an understanding of the science

of ABA. The workshop will focus on application of ABA with young learners

with autism. Specific topic areas will include motivating children to

learn through reinforcement and individualized preference assessment,

decreasing and replacing maladaptive behavior, selecting effective

prompting strategies, shaping new behavior, teaching skills through

chaining and task analysis.

2. DEVELOPING A PROACTIVE APPROACH TO MALADAPTIVE BEHAVIOR IN YOUNG

LEARNERS WITH ASD

Joanne Sgambati, PhD

This workshop will provide participants with knowledge on how to write

behavioral definitions, conduct behavioral observations and collect and

analyze behavioral data to promote enriched learning experiences.

Functional assessment procedures will be reviewed and intervention planning

will be discussed as it pertains to the young learner with ASD.

3. PROMOTING ACCELERATED LEARNING IN YOUNG LEARNERS WITH ASD

Randy Horowitz, MS Ed

This workshop will provide participants with a variety of teaching methods

to promote accelerated learning in the young learner with ASD. Specific

teaching methods will include both teacher-initiated learning and

student-initiated learning. Teaching both in a structured and natural

environment will be discussed.

4. CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT FOR YOUNG LEARNERS WITH ASD

Mc, PhD, BCBA

This workshop will provide participants with information regarding

individualized curriculum development. Specifically, discrimination

training, generalization (stimulus (across settings, materials, people,

response), foundation skills, scope and sequence and curriculum

templates/lesson plans will be reviewed.

5. PROMOTING SOCIALIZATION AND PLAY IN YOUNG LEARNERS WITH ASD

Mc, PhD, BCBA

This workshop will focus on specific techniques used to assess play and

social skills in the young learner with ASD. In addition, the workshop

will address how to select specific curriculum objectives for young

learners in the areas of play and socialization. Ways in which to motivate

children with autism to play will be discussed. Specific teaching methods

will be reviewed as they relate to play and socialization (e.g.,

video-modeling, observational learning).

6. ADVANCED CURRICULUM PLANNING for YOUNG LEARNERS WITH ASD

Dana Battaglia, M. Phil, CCC-SLP

This workshop will address the curriculum planning needs of young learners

with ASD who have surpassed the basic curriculum and have moved on to

higher-level thinking. The workshop will cover curriculum areas such as:

problem solving, flexible thinking, perspective-taking and social

referencing.

WORKSHOP FACULTY

Dana Battaglia, M. Phil. CCC-SLP

Ms. Battaglia received her Bachelors degree in Speech-Language Pathology

from C.W. Post/Long Island University, and her Master’s degree in

Speech-Language Pathology from St. ’s University in Queens, New York.

She is a licensed Speech Language Pathologist and Teacher of the Speech

and Hearing Handicapped in New York State. She holds the Certificate of

Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language and Hearing

Association (ASHA). Ms. Battaglia has conducted presentations on autism

and speech-language related topics at the local, state and national levels.

She has worked in a variety of settings, including private and public

schools, private practice, and early intervention. Currently, Ms.

Battaglia is working as a Clinical Coordinator of Outreach Services at the

Eden II/Genesis Program, while pursuing her Doctoral studies at the City

University of New York in the Speech and Hearing Sciences.

Randy Horowitz, MS Ed, SAS

Ms. Horowitz is the Associate Executive Director of Educational Services

at The Eden II Programs in Staten Island, N.Y. She has a Master of Science

in Education from Queens College and Certificate of School Administration

from the College of New Rochelle. Ms. Horowitz is an adjunct lecturer in

the Special Education Master’s Program at Queens College, CUNY. She has

presented at local, national and international conferences on topics

relating to educating students with autism.

Mc, PhD, BCBA

Dr. Mc is the Director of Outreach and Consultation Services for the

Eden II/Genesis Programs. The Department provides training and

consultation services to various programs and school districts. Dr.

Mc completed her Ph.D. in Learning Theory at the CUNY Graduate Center

and is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. She has over 17 years

experience directing programs for students with autism spectrum disorders

utilizing the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis and has also worked

in early intervention programs providing supervision, training and

consultation for almost 10 years. She is currently an Assistant Professor

in the Special Education Department at Hofstra University. Dr. Mc

presents at local and national conferences on topics related to autism and

applied behavior analysis.

Joanne Capuano Sgambati, Ph.D.

Dr. Sgambati is currently a School Psychologist for the Eden II/Genesis

Programs. She is a New York State Licensed Psychologist and a Board

Certified School Psychologist. She works as an Autism Consultant for

various school districts through Eden II/Genesis’ Outreach Department.

She has over 15 years of experience working with special education

students. She received her Doctorate at Hofstra University and her Masters

of Education at Indiana State University. She volunteers on a local Head

Start Board and is Chairperson of Long Island Advocacy Board. She presents

at various training workshops, local school districts, and SEPTAs.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

A certificate of attendance will be given to all registrants.

Each workshop will be 3 hours in duration with no breaks.

FEES

$75 per workshop, $425 if attending complete workshop series
