and since I tend to not go for 3-4 ( sometimes

I most certainly do! I am going to do some more research on this.

Thanks very much!

Joya,

The weight gain you experience could very well be from bloating from

not going for 3-4 days. That's a very long time between " movements "

(sorry guys!) I realize everybody's system is different, but my

intuition is that anything more than 2 days is questionable. You

definitely need more fiber to move things along. You'd be surprised

what adding just a few servings of fiber a day, esp. fruit, will do

for you.

Glad I could give you a guideline.

You too, ! Try getting more fruits/veggies into your diet.

I'm sure metamucil could help in a pinch. You're always better off

getting your fiber from foods, just as you're better off getting your

vitamins from food, not from pills. Vitamin pills are OK as a

supplement, but not as the only way to get your nutrients.

On the other hand, too much fiber can bind you too, so be wary of the

amounts your getting. Moderation!

,

In natural food stores, there are all sorts of products that help

kickstart the digestive track. You might want to explore that. If

you do, talk to someone from that department (herbs/vitamins) who

might be able to recommend something. Start out with something

gentle, then, if you need to, progress to the cleanses, some of which

work like Roto Rooter!

Good luck!

And congratulations on your bonus!

medicines are constipating. Whenever I have had a problem because of

medicines, I take dacusate, an inexpensive nonprescription pill. It's a

OMG I can't remember the no of times my mother used to drag me to the

quacks for not going everyday....to be told there was nothing wrong...

It was only a few years ago that things changed. The last visit to

the quack had him putting me under IBS, but after some articles in

magazines and a chat with a really great woman in the local health

food store I'm trying some heavy dosage of herbal remedies over the

next 3 months to try and sort my digestive system (the food

intolerances where getting worse too) and after 3 weeks (and that

stomach bug last week) I'm beginning to feel better, so here's hoping

that it works.

First of all, I have to agree with Elena that a lot of medications are known to constipate.

Second, one other aspect that no one has mentionned, I'm sure you know this, but I just have to make sure. Fiber is great, but it doesn't work alone. The more fiber you have in your diet, the more water you need to drink. Water acts with fiber to soften stool.

Third, just wanted to let you know that colon cancer is extremely rare in people under 35 unless they have a family history, a polyposis syndrome or ulcerative colitis (a disease related to Crohn's).

Thanks for the advice. I am sure there a few others on this list who have the

I regularly (no pun intended) use metamucil and citracil..also fiber capsules.

There are in fact home test kits to determine if you have trace amounts of blood in your stool (which is an indicator of colon cancer). However, a negative Guaic (the name of the test) does not confirm the absence of cancer.

, don't EVER let a doctor tell you you're too young to have a

certain condition. I was born with a diseased gall bladder and went

through 13 horrible years of attacks before the doctors would even

THINK about testing me for it. Through my mom's persistence and many

doctors later, she found a doctor that would finally test me. Lo and

Hate to perpetuate a conversation about 'regularity' so to speak, but

my hub had a problem with this (because he eats pizza, bread, cheese

and things like that all the time). I do get veggies in him but

only at dinner when I get them too - I eat mine during the day too,

but he's not here with me then to force feed! haha.

Anyways, my point being he had a similar problem to , with not

being very 'regular'. I finally convinced him to go to a doctor to

make sure this wasn't a problem that entailed more than just his

eating habits. The doctor ran tests, blood tests, etc, checked to

make sure he wasn't lactose intolerant, etc etc, and finally came to

the conclusion that he needs MUCH more fiber in his diet. So the doc

recommended Citracel (sp?) in powder form, and he takes it daily. It

works wonders for the regularity thing according to him. I don't

know now how much it does for your diet - but if that's the probablem

you are looking to cure immediately until you get more fiber in your

diet regularly, this is a good place to start.

Some of my fav. high fiber things are bran muffins for breakfast

(across the street they sell a great cherry/bran muffin) Fruit &

Fibre cereal, and Kellogg's basic 4, then Pepperidge Farm sells a

lowfat wheat bread - not only is it 1 gram of fat for 3 slices, but

it has good fiber in it. Also, granola bars often have good fiber.

I believe peas are high in fiber & so is broccoli.

The other thing I'm trying to make sure I get more of in my diet (not

really related to fiber) is calcium. My grandmom suffers from

osteoporosis, and I don't want that at alL!!! I've started drinking

more milk, and when that's not possible, OJ enriched with calcium,

and cereals like Total that have not only added calcium, but a lot of

other vitamins. I do take a multivitamin but that's it as far as

those. I like to eat a lot of yogurt too it is high in calcium.

Anyways, just some tidbits I guess!

And you know, Ann marie has a point here. If you want to rule the

Colon Cancer thing out, why not just get tested?? I think there are

My husband had many tests run when he had your problem, bloodwork,

just a diet/fiber problem. Turns out the doctor was right on about

him needing more fiber, but was more than happy to accomodate my

husband and test him for other possibilities.

Good luck!

I ACTUALLY meant to add that for SOME people certain brands of fiber

suppliments work better than others... Case in point my husband

started with Metamucil, and that didn't do MUCH at all! Once he

switched to Citracel, it worked like a charm! So if at first you

don't succeed, try a different brand! If you don't like mixing the

drinks, I believe there is a chewable form out now, and some even

have a flavored pre-mixed can, or a powder you can mix with OJ or a

fruit drink.

My hub says he just downs it in one big gulp and that cures

any 'distaste' for the product. I've tried it once, it tastes like

Tang or OJ.

Yah know my DH had this problem too and his Dr. told him it

was from too much exercise :0 he used the Citracel that AmyN refers

to and everything went back to working order :)

addiction :0 and would get really cranky without either one ;)
