Guest guest
I have a child (4 year old male) who will fully initiate to use the toilet to make a pee. But will refuse to use the toilet to make a bowel movement. He never requests to use the toilet to maker a bowel movement and is perfectly ok making one in his underwear. He is fully aware when he is going (does not have any parasites or allergies), he goes into the corner and does it there, or in the closet. Bringing him into the bathroom increases his behaviours (aggressive, escape), and he definatley uses his weight against his parents. When he is finished making his BM, he comes to his parents and says " poo-poo " and lies down so that they can change him. He doesn't ever make a BM at school, this only happens at home. Does it make sense to put him back into a pull up and hope and wait? i don't want to go backwards, but this is the recommendations the parents are getting. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Guest guest
I would recommend you read chapter 11 of my book (The Verbal Behavior Approach) and/or FAQ re: potty training on my web site: _http://verbalbehaviorapproach.com/faq2.html_ (http://verbalbehaviorapproach.com/faq2.html) . I had the same problem with my son.....here is a short excerpt from Chapter 11 of my book: Within a month or two, Lucas was schedule trained for urination, and we were thrilled. But he still continued to have bowel movements in his underwear every day or every other day. He would wait until I was not looking and go behind the sofa, squat and have a bowel movement in his underwear. Needless to say, I was very frustrated. After three or four months of this, with no change, I called Dr. Foxx on the telephone because I had met him on previous occasions and hoped he’d be able to help with my dilemma with Lucas. He recommended that I find a reinforcer that Lucas would “die for†and that we begin using Positive Practice for the bowel accidents. So, on those occasions that Lucas did have a bowel movement in the toilet I put him in the car and took him through the Mcs drive-through, telling him the entire time how proud I was that he pooped in the potty. I only had to use Positive Practice one or two times because within two days after speaking with Dr. Foxx, Lucas was completely trained for both bowel and bladder. A few quick things to think about....1) boys should sit on the toilet (not stand) to pee until they are fully bowel trained. 2) Data should be taken on when he has a BM in his underwear to see if there is a pattern. 3) A huge reinforcer needs to be determined to get him to sit and try to have a BM on the toilet and lastly 4) positive practice may need to be tried if a completely positive approach fails.
