Guest guest
I first went through our list of providers from the insurance company. I probably called 30 people w/out much luck. The guy we're going to now, I got from someone on this discussion group. I also went through the list from the OC Foundation. The first person I called and tried twice was not good w/ ocd (in my opinion). But I did find another that I really liked (doesn't take insurance) and would probably use as a backup if the current one(is on our insurance) doesn't work out. Also, I got a name from a friend of another guy who seemed (based on a couple of phone calls) good, but he also doesn't take insurance. Basically, ask anyone you can (I had to be careful because my son didn't want me telling anyone he had ocd) if they can recommend someone. And if you speak w/ a doctor that doesn't work w/ ocd, ask them if they can recommend someone else. Ask pediatricians, your PCP, etc.

Guest guest
I posted on our homeschool boards, and asked everyone we knew. We found a friend of a friend, a mutual friend really, whose son was being seen by ours. We love her. She didn't have lots of OCD experience that I could tell, some but not a specialist or anything. She very quickly came up to speed for Ben. We did a lot at home too from books and her suggestions. J Re: therapist In a message dated 10/19/2006 3:43:40 P.M. Guest guest
Before our dd was dx with OCD, our ds was dx with ADHD. I was familiar with the clinic he goes to and it was suggested by our ped. When dd was dx with OCD, we were happy with the clinic already, plus our ped suggested it. I know other people whose kids go there for various issues, as well. Sharon therapist I am just curious how most people find their therapist? Would ya'll mind letting me know? Guest guest
I'll tell you what bugs me about these therapists ... if I were a therapist and had a child come to me for ocd and I did not have much knowledge/experience treating children with ocd, I would attend a training/continuing education or read up to acquire additional information on treating children with ocd. If I knew there was no ocd specialist in my area, I would become that specialist. It seems like they are just content to do their thing, knowing there are proven therapeutic techniquest that can make life better for these children, but they are not willing to learn them. (okay ... this is most therapists. There are a few gems out there!) That is my gripe of the day. <lauraj2@...> wrote: I posted on our homeschool boards, and asked everyone we knew. Guest guest
I had a pretty good feel beforehand for the clinic where Becca now goes. My oldest daughter Tori had some general anxiety issues and our pediatrician recommended a therapist in the same clinic. The doc was great, and after about a year, Tori was able to end visits there. Also, Becca was first diagnosed with ADD and a wonderful doctor there did the testing. She was actually the one our pediatrician recommended for the OCD (and the one I wanted), but her caseload was full. The pediatrician wanted Becca to start therapy ASAP, so the woman Becca talks to now was second on the list. This clinic staffs very competant physicians and therapists - I'm very fortunate that this kind of faciltiy exists in rural PA. I hope this helps, > > I am just curious how most people find their therapist? Would ya'll > mind letting me know? Guest guest
Gripe away , you deserve to!! I am sure many of us understand your frustration. I wonder if for some they are just too busy, or just oblivious that they really don't know how to treat them.
