Guest guest
Hi, My son is 9 years old and we are having real problems with getting him to sit on the toilet to do a bm. He will sit and do a wee but when it comes to doing a bm he has to stand up. I have had him checked out medically but he is fine. I believe he has just gotten into a bad habit of standing up somewhere in the house to do his thing. We have been working on this off and on over the last couple of years. We have had behaviour anaylists involved. We have tried the shaping process where we try to get him standing as close to the toilet as possible to do his thing, the idea being that one day he will learn to stand in the toilet with his pull up on and do a bm, then gradually train him to sit on the toilet etc. But he just resists, he can't seem to relax. We have tried laxatives and enamas but he can just hold it in. We have visuals, reinforcers etc... He is now 9 years old and has got used to standing up to do a bm - it would not be comfortable for him to sit down and do a bm. We are getting really desperate. My friend has suggested giving him a cold shower, or something aversive after he has messed his pullups to try and teach him that pooing in his pants is naughty. I have loads of data on his toileting behaviours but nobody seems to know what to do with it. Has anybody got any ideas of what we should be doing as nobody seems to know what to do anymore. Guest guest
Hello and Group, I wanted to share something that worked for us in regards to toilet training for BMs our son with autism. Mind you this is not at all medical advise this is a mom sharing something that helped her son... My son also did the " standing " to poop thing. It was always a struggle to get him to " recognize the sensation " that he needed to poop unless he as standing up. He has normal poops but every now and then would " withhold " becasue we were not letting him go to a corner of the room and poop while we tried to get him toilet trainined..so the withholding would casue some consitpation but other then that he has never had any other gut issues. One day when Ty was 5 years old while visiting with a girl friend whos hubby is a chiropractor I mentioned that Ty seemed to have a slight limp. Her hubby did a quick assessment of Ty and said that Ty had subluxation in his pelvis and so he did an adjustment and instantly Tys slight limp went away. I started talking to her hubby about the science behind chiropractics and he talked about the nerves in the spin etc. Being even slightly out of wack can pinch certain nerves and cause sensations in the lower back pelvis legs to be lessened or impaired...anyways I kid you not that very night Ty was able to sit on the toilet and have his very 1st bowel movement while sitting down. It was like he had a whole new world of senstations...we had to practice and still are practicing for him to be able to recognize the sensation and then go to the bathroom for his bm (he is now 8) So maybe getting a few adjustments might help, its safe painless and relativley inexpensive.
