Guest guest
I have some questions for group. Any and all answers would be appreciated. 1. If someone has BCBA does that mean they are qualified to be consultant for my program for early intervention? 2. What are the responsibilities of my consultant and my therapists? How do I know my consultant is doing what they are supposed to be doing? 3. Whose responsibility is it to organize my child's binder? Do I need to print the data sheets or should the consultant? 4. What detail should my consultant be going into when writing my programs? how do i know which programs need my consultant to write targets and which ones need general goals? Is it true that VB programs don't have targets and ABA programs do? How much NET versus DTT should my consultant be planning? 5. I am just looking for some expectations of each person on my team. How do I know if consultant and therapists are doing a good job? God bless. -Autism Mommy
Guest guest
Reg Reynolds Responses interspersed. Just my " off the top of my head " opinions, of course. questions! help! Posted by: " mommy_autism " mommy_autism@... mommy_autism Thu Feb 5, 2009 6:55 pm (PST) I have some questions for group. Any and all answers would be appreciated. 1. If someone has BCBA does that mean they are qualified to be consultant for my program for early intervention? Absolutely not. You want someone who also knows how to apply that knowledge to children such as your own. 2. What are the responsibilities of my consultant and my therapists? If you are wise, reinforce " good " behaviour through paying them, having snacks available for team meetings, providing social reinforcement, etc. How do I know my consultant is doing what they are supposed to be doing? As a general rule, yyou might start by evaluating your consultant against criteria such as: Responsibility a.. Understands that he/she is the one responsible for the child's program b.. Vets the suitability of the Senior Therapist and Instructor Therapist(s) c.. Assumes direction of the Senior Therapist and, through him/her, the Instructor Therapists Education and Experience a.. Member of a Regulated Health Profession b.. Ph.D. in Psychology (preferred) c.. Equivalent training and experience d.. Knowledge of ABA as applied to children with autism e.. Experienced with children and/or adolescents f.. Experienced in dealing with school personnel g.. Skilled in assessment and remediation of challenging behaviours in children and adolescents with PDD Safety and Security a.. Has ensured that all IBI team members have been cleared by the Police Check (including the Sex Offender registry) Supervisory Competence a.. Knows what is needed in an ISP and ensures that it is provided b.. Checks to see that foundational skills are being covered (e.g., If the child is in Grade 2, has assessed whether or not foundational skills from Kindergarten and Grade 1 have been mastered and, if not, has instructed the ST to see that they are part of the child's current or future curriculum) Judgement a.. If not a child psychologist, knows when to consult one b.. A good person-manager Program Evaluation a.. Knowledge of program evaluation b.. Under his/her guidance, the child and family are learning as well as their circumstances allow Relationship with Other Professionals a.. Relationships with other professionals are poor __ good __ excellent __ 3. Whose responsibility is it to organize my child's binder? Do I need to print the data sheets or should the consultant? To be negotiated. Remember that your consultant is probably charging you for his/her time. 4. What detail should my consultant be going into when writing my programs? Assuming your child has autism, considerable detail is required. how do i know which programs need my consultant to write targets and which ones need general goals? You need specific targets if you are to know whether or not they are being met. Is it true that VB programs don't have targets and ABA programs do? Absolutely not! How much NET versus DTT should my consultant be planning? That depends on the child. " Establishing Operations " recommends relatively more NET for beginners and advanced learners, and relatively more ITT (i.e., what you might be thinking of as DTT or table work, although that is somewhat imprecise) for intermediate learners. 5. I am just looking for some expectations of each person on my team. How do I know if consultant and therapists are doing a good job? If the program is working properly, there will be demonstrated/measured/graphed satisfactory progress, in a relatively short time. If that isn't happening, you need to either (a) accept the slow rate of progress, which I would be reluctant to do, or ( rethink what is being done.
