Hello, I don't think I introduced myself and my wonderful daughter on this

list. I have read several digests and it sounds as if we are not alone in

our peculiar struggles. One thing that makes me feel a bit different is

that I have OCD also. My daughter Ami is 12 and last year began exhibiting

OCD symptoms; no p-docs have dxd her with it, although she was dxd " Anxiety

Disorder NOS " during the onset of symptoms, since she hadn't had them long

enough to fit the DSM criteria. Anyway, I keep having flashbacks (joke)

because my childhood was eerily similar, except I wasn't dxd, medicated, or

treated in any way. Since it was a small town in the 70s, I basically was

regarded as a behavior problem. I didn't get treated for OCD until I was 30

years old.

Ami, on the other hand, is getting treatment from the local kids' mental

health clinic. They have not done any CBT although I recently requested it.

(Somehow, I thought that was standard therapy for OCD, but through almost

a year of therapy, she never got any) Ami's therapist (who is actually

pretty great at self-esteem, anger management, parenting, etc. topics) is

planning to " staff " the case around the beginning of the year and either

find someone in the agency who is trained in CBT or refer out.

Ami's big problems are with contamination - handwashing, changing clothes,

and cleaning up after going to the bathroom. Right now her obsessions are

really labor-intensive for me, because despite my best efforts to limit the

compulsions, there is still a lot of laundry to be done and a lot of toilet

paper, baby wipes, and soap to replace. Ami is afraid of germs, disease,

smells, stickiness, etc. etc. and of course there is no reassuring her with

reality even though she is perfectly intelligent and able to understand how

irrational the fears are. As if puberty wasn't hard enough without this

crap to deal with. Ami is on Prozac, 60 mg daily and Ativan PRN (we try to

use it sparingly!). She also had nonverbal learning disability and is on an

IEP in school for math. Her verbal IQ is above average. Another

complicating factor is that she is terribly, terribly oppositional. She

would rather argue than obey, in most circumstances. This has been a

lifelong problem.

I dxd myself with OCD in my twenties and synthesized self-help techniques

from cognitive therapies I'd received for major depression. I have always

functioned okay with some bumps in the road, but am doing much better on an

SSRI. What's strange is, although I have the disorder myself and have dealt

with it with some measure of success, I have no adequate way to convey this

learning to my Ami. She has to go down her own road of learning and

healing. Which is really hard because I always want to rescue her, which is

my major parenting flaw. Oh well, that's another post.

I'm a single mom and professional. Ami is my only child, so far. Sigh.

It's been really hard lately and I'm glad there is support out there, even

though it is only online. There is no support group I know of around here

that meets IRL. Thanks for " listening " .

Hi T,

I'm a single mom also, 3 sons. , 15, has OCD; also has

diagnoses of dysgraphia and Aspergers.

Luckily hasn't had any real contamination problems. He had a

lot of compulsions in the beginning (back around age 11.5); some were

so weird/unheard of that I actually wished he had some of the more

commonly known OCD things like contamination!

I'm glad her mental health therapist is actually working towards

finding someone or referring. At least that sounds promising! We

have no one either at our local mental health, and I work there

(office assistant)!

Well, wanted to welcome you. This group has always been my greatest

support and knowledge base (1 word or 2??) since this all began!

Hello everyone,

My name is Kirsten and I am a university student from Ontario. I

recently discovered 's podcast and decided that joining this

group would be a good idea.

My story is that I was always the " fat kid " in elementary school. So

all of my life I have dealt with the teasing and consequences of not

looking like I'm " supposed " to look. When I moved away from home last

year to come to university, I decided to finally dedicate myself to

losing weight. I went from a size 10/12 (14 at my highest) to now a

size 6/7 with the help of a meal plan from a dietician and a gym

membership included with my tuition. During this summer, I was down

to a 5/6.

Here is where the problem begins. Now that I am in my second year, I

am suddenly experiencing binges and I have gained about 10 lbs back.

I am trying to get back to where I was only a few months ago, but as

soon as I get back on track and feel good, something triggers inside

of me and I binge, hide food, and then feel extremely guilty.

So that is my story. I hope that by listening to the podcast,

participating in this group, and doing the activities suggested by

, that I will be able to discover what is going on, and work at

making it better.
