Hello, Listmates:

Have any of you read the book Amy's Game: The Concealed Structure of Education?

The author lives here in Wisconsin and I met him last month. He told me that

the book takes on education in general and education of children with special

needs in particular, outlining what's wrong with the system (e.g., not using

empirically proven methods, etc.). It profiles a child with autism who entered

public school and deteriorated after having succeeded beautifully in an ABA

program. According to the ABA professionals who were at that meeting, the book

is a very hard-hitting indictment of special education--in a state that

supposedly has the best special education in the country!

I just learned that the national Direct Instruction association will carry a

positive review of the book in the next newsletter (Direct Instruction is one of

the most effective educational methods for individuals on the autism spectrum),

so I get the impression that the book is getting noticed. Today, another parent

mentioned the book to me because her advocate sent it to members of the school

board. That made me take notice.

I just wondered if anyone on the list has read it? I am with an autism parent

group that regularly invites authors to speak and thought I'd get feedback while

I'm waiting for my copy of the book to arrive.

Here's a link to the book's website: www.amysgame.com if any of you want to

check it out.

Thanks,

Liz

PS: I'm sure I don't have to mention that I have no financial interest

whatsoever in the book, but I thought I'd say it just to make sure. (Even the

author has waived all monetary interest in the book. All of the money goes into

a special fund to help Amy get services.)
