Evaluations typically consist of a combination of formal standardized tests as well as less formal observations and checklists. The complex learning characteristics as well as scattered skill profiles of learners with autism often makes assessment challenging. This presentation will provide an overview of the learning profiles of individuals with ASD and their impact on the assessment process. In addition, different standardized and non-standardized tests and evaluation tools will be discussed along with implications for their use. A primary focus of this workshop will be to provide effective evaluation tools and procedures to address comprehensive program development for the learner with ASD. Tuesday, June 17, 2008 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Four Points by Sheraton, Plainview Fee: $75.00 AUGMENTATIVE/ALTERNATIVE COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS: TRANSITIONING FROM PECS TO VOICE OUTPUT COMMUNICATION AIDS: PRACTICAL ISSUES & CONSIDERATIONS Jan Downey, MA, CCC-SLP, Bainor, MA, CCC-SLP, Helen Guggino, MA It is estimated that 30-50% of individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) may never develop functional speech; therefore, augmentative/alternative communication systems are necessary to increase language and communication skills in learners with autism throughout their life span. It is our role as Speech Pathologists to determine which system is most effective, and to modify or change a student’s current system to continue to meet their communicative needs. This workshop will discuss when to consider transitioning to a Voice Output Communication Aid (VOCA) for students who are using a Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) book or board. The unique language and learning characteristics of individuals with autism will also be reviewed as knowledge of these unique aspects is critical when considering transitioning from non-electronic aided systems to electronic voice output communication aids. General criteria for transitioning from PECS to VOCA including the assessment of a student’s individual needs will be discussed.
