The most important aspect of designing an individualized language intervention

program for a child with autism is an accurate assessment of a child’s

existing skills, and their learning barriers that may be in the way of progress.

This workshop will teach the participant, who is already familiar with B. F.

Skinner’s analysis of verbal behavior and ABA methodology (e.g., mands, tacts,

intraverbals, discrete trial training), how to administer the VB-MAPP, and how

to develop and implement an intervention program for a child with autism. The

VB-MAPP is a new language and social skills assessment tool that is based on

Skinner’s analysis of verbal behavior, and typical developmental milestones.

The VB-MAPP has three components. The first component is the VB-MAPP Skills

Assessment. This part of the assessment is designed to provide a representative

sample of a child’s existing verbal and related repertoires. The VB-MAPP

Skills Assessment contains 150 verbal behavior milestones across 3 developmental

levels (0-18 months, 18-30 months, and 30-48 months) and 14 different skill

areas. The second component is the VB-MAPP Skills Task Analysis, which provides

a further breakdown of each of the 14 different skills in the form of a

checklist for skill tracking. The third part is the VB-MAPP Barriers Assessment,

which provides an assessment of 22 common learning and language barriers faced

by children with autism (e.g., defective mands, defective intraverbals, rote

responding, self-stimulation, behavior problems). The results obtained from the

VB-MAPP will suggest specific IEP goals and where to place a child in an

intervention program. Several aspects of the verbal behavior language

intervention program will also be presented. Each participant will receive a

copy of the VB-MAPP, including analyses of the barriers, placement

recommendations, and intervention strategies.

• The new verbal behavior assessment program: The VB-MAPP

• The new Analysis of Language Acquisition Barriers (ALAB) assessment

• The new IEP and intervention placement program

• The new sequence of each of the 14 target repertoires (i.e., mand, tact,

intraverbal, etc.)

• The use of typical language development and Skinner's VB as a curriculum

guide

• The latest versions of the intervention procedures

• The new social skills part of the VB-MAPP and intervention procedures

• Lots of new video presentations
