Guest guest
The adolescents are in a residential treatment setting, and we are wanting to implement ABA methodology. Not DTT, more of behavior management, reinforcement, token systems, etc. My background is with younger children, so I am looking to gather resources on using ABA strategies with teenagers. Guest guest
Token systems work well for teens, as well as behavior contracting. Using behavior contracts also work well, since both parties negotiate and agree in writing to the expectations and consequences. However, many teens with special needs have strong " executive functioning " problems. That means that have difficulty using forethought, are often impulsive, and often act without thinking. They often require a lot of role playing, previewing and reviewing the expectations and consequences. I prefer to put all contingencies into a behavior contract, so it is literal and black and white. From there we do not scold, counsel, or argue with the teen, just let the consequences teach the behavior. When transgressions occur, do not get emotional, justify, or negotiate at that time. Stay matter of fact, and let the consequence teach the behavior.
