We have struggled with this from the beginning. First, are you looking for some

" concrete " I am's? I think it would only be the highest functioning kids who

could grasp the concept of I think therefore I am or whatever. We've tried

things like " I am happy " or " I am cold " and we've just not gotten it. If anyone

else has anything that seemed to work, I'd love to hear it.

Language for learning targets this starting with actions and works on

tenses as well. You can view by googling sra-mcgrawhill.

My son is what is considered high functioning, but still with many issues.

He is verbal. Even so when there are social pragmatic language issues, this

is one of hardest areas to teach. Through ABA therapy where all of this is

worked on the way they were able to teach him and me in turn work on this

concept at home was through visual picture stories. Take a picture of

your child. Take a picture of the things he likes. Take pictures of

expressions. Cut out the expressions, laminate, and place velcro on the back.

Make

him/her put them on the picture of himself.
