Guest guest
I have a question. What should be taught first? Categories sorting or " same and different " ? What I mean is this. I have a problem now with my daughter. She can do same and different in identical objects. Lett's say, I have 10 apples and one banana then she can tell me what's same and what's different. But the minute I make the objects non identical, it's hard for her. Like different kind of balls and a cup, she can't say what is different. All 'red' things and a 'green' thing she can't say what's different unless all the 'red' things are identical. Now my question is should be able to sort 100% all categories(she can sort by color without any doubt, categories sorting is iffy) before I introduce the same and different concept? Please let me know your thoughts. Also, can you please help me with suggestions as to how I can teach her identifying 'different' when there are non-identical objects. Thanks. Guest guest
I think it is important to look at the sorting skills and to also check these things: 1. What is the instruction being given? Is it clear? If someone put out some red things and a green thing and they were all nonidentical and said " which one is different? " I might say " well they are all different but this one is a different color " But if someone said " which one is not red " I would easily say " that green one " Â 2. If she can sort colors you could start with picking out items that are different colors because she can tell what something " is " she should start to be able to tell what something " is not " 3. Another way I have done same/different is to put out two cards and hand the child a third, the third card is the same as one of the cards and different from one of the cards. I then say " put with same " or " put with different " or " which one is the same " " which one is different " I am not sure if this would be more difficult or if it would be more difficult to do it with several cards and asking " which one is different " 4. There are lots of worksheets and fun games on the computer that target " which one does not belong " it might be more motivating for her to learn the skill using these materials 5. Does she understand the concept of " no " or " not " If you ask her if she wants something can she indicate yes/no? If you ask her a yes/no question " does a dog say moo? " can she answer yes/no? Once again I am not sure if this skill is harder or easier but it is something that she might need prior to being able to do " not " 6. If you just put out two cards and say " which one is not (color) " can she do that? This would be easier than doing it with several cards displayed Here are some links I found about teaching same/different http://www.ces.purdue.edu/providerparent/child%20growth-development/Understandin\ gSameDiff.htm http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3614/is_199510/ai_n8718398/?tag=content;\ col1 I hope this information is helpful ~ DeLeon, M.S., BCBA Navigation Behavioral Consulting " Navigating the world of behavior, changing the course of people's lives " www.navigationbehavioralconsulting.com blog.navigationbehavioralconsulting.com From: formydear9 <formydear9@...> Subject: [ ] Question on category sorting and more Date: Thursday, December 3, 2009, 11:22 PM Â I have a question.
