Guest guest
formydear9 and group, Have you done your 6YO daughter's assessment using the ABLLS? If not, that is your next step. You can order this assessment from Different Roads to Learning,an online store. It will assess your daughter's skills and show you exactly what to teach. ,Colin P's mom On Wed, Jan 13, 2010 at 4:13 PM, formydear9 <formydear9@...> wrote: > > > Hello everyone - happy New Year!Sorry about the cross post. > I am looking for ideas on how to work on improving the receptive language > for my 6 yr old daughter. Guest guest
I second 's suggestion on the ABLLS-R assessment, and perhaps the VB-MAPP. We have " Teach Me Language " , but I know what you mean - even though the authors state that compliance is the main prerequisite, we found it hard to use until some basic skills and conceptual understanding was established (and I am not fond of the layout). That said, there are good suggestions on what/how to teach, once that is appropriate. Another suggestion of a structured program is SRA's Direct Instruction program " Language for learning " (which has a current 2008 edition) It's pricey - $$$, so lower cost close equivalents are the 1999 previous edition, or Distar Language I. You can find both on eBay from time to time. Here's a placement test for Language for Learning 2008 to get a handle on how a child would be placed in the program https://www.sraonline.com/download/LanguageforLearning2008/PlacementTest/Lang_fo\ r_Learning_Placement_Test.pdf SRA also has an online support community for DI users with descriptions of curriculum packages and more placement tests. http://www.sradirectinstruction.com/ Engelmann's " Low Performer's Manual " 158pp. gives skill prerequisites for entry into Distar Language I/Language for Learning, and describes skill goals and how to teach basic skills. There is also a brief assessment of language level and comprehension starting on page 71. http://www.zigsite.com/PDFs/LowPerfManual.pdf There's some stuff about aversive feedback in this manual, or at least was so in the past, because this was originally authored in the 1970's, but for the purposes of this, what you are looking for are those prerequisites and skill mastery, and Engelmann is a master of assessment of instructional design and gives useful information about where misunderstandings might arise from.
