Mashed Potato Question????

Does anyone know how to do "garlic mash" like in restaurants. I never know if the garlic is supposed to be cooked before adding to the mash. I know that if it isn't cooked that is when you get garlic smelly breath - and I hate that. I also am making mashed sweet potato with nutmeg & all spice, so maybe the garlic mash would be too much anyway.
