WORKSHOP SERIES

1. DECREASING BEHAVIOR AND INCREASING COMMUNICATION AND COMPREHENSION

THROUGH A VARIETY OF VISUAL STRATEGIES

Dana Battaglia, M.Phil, CCC-SLP

When children are communicatively challenged, they inevitably become

frustrated, non-compliant, and/or may exhibit avoidance behavior. The

source of many inappropriate behaviors for individuals with Autism Spectrum

Disorders (ASD) is most frequently the inability to be understood. While

several individuals with ASD are auditory learners, the use of visual

supports has been shown to be helpful in acquisition of language concepts

(i.e. increasing comprehension of break time, transitions, waiting, and

requesting). As children with ASD gain proficiency with the use of visual

supports, endless possibilities are available to facilitate increased

language, which ultimately decreases maladaptive behavior. This workshop

is intended to demonstrate some language based visual supports, in order to

enhance communication and decrease behaviors.

2. MOVING BEYOND BASIC TEACHING METHODS TO PROMOTE ACCELERATED LEARNING

IN YOUNG CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS

Mc, PhD, BCBA

This workshop focuses on a variety of research-based teaching strategies

that extend beyond discrete trial teaching, which have been shown to be

successful for individuals with autism. The workshop emphasizes strategies

that assist in teaching a variety of skills to students autism such as:

promoting independence, increasing play and recreation and leisure skills,

improving spontaneous language use, as well as promoting conversational

skills. Some of the teaching strategies to be covered include the use of

picture and written schedules, use of textual and audio scripts, incidental

teaching, and video modeling. Videotape examples are shown throughout the

seminar depicting each of the teaching strategies.

3. EFFECTIVE YET " FAMILY FRIENDLY " BEHAVIOR INTERVENTION STRATEGIES FOR

CHILDREN ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM

Cicero, PhD, BCBA

Have you ever felt that strategies recommended to you by a behavior

analyst were just too difficult to implement in the home? Sometimes what

works in a structured teaching session is not a practical strategy for the

home setting and to be carried out by family members. Instead of " watering

down " applied behavior analysis for a family, it is possible to modify

specific strategies to make plan implementation possible. This workshop

will address this concern by introducing the audience to effective behavior

intervention plans while keeping focus on what is practical to implement in

a family's home.

Tuesday, September 23, 2008

4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Four Points by Sheraton, Plainview

Fee: $75

4. PROBLEM SOLVING YOUR WAY TO SUCCESS WHEN TEACHING MORE CHALLENGED

LEARNERS

Joanne Gerenser, PhD, CCC-SLP

Students with autism spectrum disorders require individualized

intervention in order to reach their potential. When working with a

learner who is more challenged, you will need to problem solve continuously

in order to promote learning. This workshop will focus on learners who may

struggle with acquiring, maintaining and generalizing skills. Data

analysis will be reviewed as it pertains to learning curves and data-based

decision making. Clinical-problem solving will be discussed as well as

specific strategies for promoting and maintaining skills. Participants

will be provided cases to problem solve within a group format.
