Video modeling is a way to teach children and/or adults' skills through having

them watch videos of the skills being performed by others or themselves.

What kind of skills can it teach?

Video modeling has been shown to be effective in teaching skills in:

Social engagement/initiation

Perspective Taking (Theory of Mind)

Complex Play Sequences

Spontaneous Requests

Appropriate Behaviors

Compliment Giving

Conversational Speech

Socio-dramatic Play

Community Skills

Daily Living Skills

Perception of Emotions

Academic Skills

Generalization of Mastered Skills

Who can benefit from Video Modeling?

Video modeling is effective for anyone who likes to watch videos. Learning

skills through video demonstration can be effective with toddlers to adults.

Most research has been done with people/children with disabilities such as

Down's syndrome, Autism, Asperger's, and Mental Retardation.

Why does it work?

Videos hold a certain entertainment appeal for most people and when using it to

teach, the student doesn't realize they are learning because they are enjoying

themselves. Video is also very easy to attend to. Have you ever tried to have a

conversation with someone, with a video going in the background? It's really

hard to ignore the video. Most people are attracted to watching videos, this

makes the learning itself reinforcing.

A lot of people with disabilities are able to process and apply visual

information better than auditory information. Video modeling provides visual

demonstration of skills that increases the likelihood of imitation. Specific

disabilities have a hard time filtering information when it is given to them in

the natural environment. In video modeling, the camera is able to catch the

important information and the person watching doesn't have all the other

extraneous information to edit out.

How do you use it effectively?

There are various ways that professionals have used video modeling. In all of

the research, the person is presented with the video usually at least 3 times

and then presented with a similar situation where the imitation of the skill is

assessed. Pairing imitation of the skill with reinforcement such as praise or

tangible rewards can increase the likelihood of the behavior to increase. Other

techniques such as chaining, least to most prompting and visual cues have been

used to support the imitation of the skill after the video has been viewed.
