Sensory Issues and Communication

Saturday, February 6, 2010, 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Workshop with Bhanu Raghavan, MS, OTR/L and Trish Wathen, MA CCC SLP

Location: The Children's Medical Center of Dayton

One Children's Plaza, Dayton, OH 45404, Auditorium (Lower Level)

This workshop will help the participants understand the following:

.. Sensory needs of students with sensory integration difficulties

and autism spectrum disorders

.. Define sensory processing issues in a step by step manner

.. How sensory processing issues impact behavior and interfere with

learning

.. Develop proactive sensory strategies and sensory diet for students

with sensory processing issues

.. Total Communication (sign language, PECS, and verbal

communication)

.. How to work on communication in the natural environment

.. How to enhance social skills

.. Social Stories

This seminar is free for DAFEAT members.

Cost for non-members is $36 and includes a year-long DAFEAT membership.

About Bhanu Raghavan, MS, OTR/L.

Bhanu Raghavan, MS, OTR/L has been an occupational therapist with Centerville

Schools for over 18 years. She earned her BS from Indiana University and MS

from the Ohio State University in Occupational Therapy. She is trained and

certified in the evaluation and treatment of students with sensory processing

disorders. Each year she gives several workshops for teachers and parents on

sensory integration and fine motor development. In addition to working for

Centerville City Schools, Bhanu is currently writing a book to promote

independence with self-help skills among children with autism spectrum disorders

and developmental delays.

About Trish Wathen MA, CCC SLP.

Trish Wathen, MA CCC SLP has been a speech and language pathologist with

Centerville City Schools for over 30 years. She earned her BS from Eastern

Kentucky University and her MA from University of Cincinnati in Speech and

Language Pathology. She is trained and certified in the evaluation of speech and

language disorders. Trish works with intervention specialists and families to

support communication needs of students with autism spectrum disorders.
