Guest guest
Dear Listmates, I originally sent this out at the end of April, but I erroneously sent it only to myself! A big thanks goes out to those who contacted me offline with great ideas. Having a nonvocal child means that we have to really adapt otherwise straightforward techniques, so it's always a bit of a challenge, and ideas are always welcome. Parents of nonvocal children unite, for all we have to lose is our feeling of being at a loss at how to do this! Thanks so much. So for beginning sight reading (she can already sight-read a number of words she's picked up in her preschool environment). Thus, we are starting with recptive ID for sight words. > > For example, if we used an array of 3 printed text words and ask her to receptively identify them, what word or words do you use? I was thinking something along these lines, but am rather unsure: > > - Find the card that reads Mama > - Which one says Mama? > - Show me the one that spells Mama. > > Not sure what key words to teach here -- say, read, spell? All fo the above, in order to mix and match? > > I have read a number of great posts in the group archives, many by of Talking Words, that have been really very, very helpful. I've just ordered the book she recommends, Teaching Reading to Children with Down Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and Teachers. > > Any further insight into sight reading SDs, teaching sight words, or additional resources would be greatly, greatly appreciated. > > Best, > Theresa >
