Teaching Manding To Students with Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities

Presented by Dr.  J. Carbone, Board Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctoral

Manding (requesting) is verbal behavior that produces immediate benefit for the

learner and is one of the first forms of social initiation children learn. Many

children with autism and developmental disabilities fail to acquire this

important skill without intensive and precise instruction.   This workshop

focuses on teaching manding skills to children with autism and other

developmental disabilities.  Dr. Carbone will be addressing how parents,

professionals, and paraprofessionals can teach children early manding skills

(e.g. single word vocal and manual sign language mands) as well as advanced

manding skills (e.g. manding for information, prepositions, pronouns).

Dr. Carbone will also focus on alternative methods of communication, such as

sign language or picture/ icon selection or exchange systems. This workshop will

first provide a behavioral analysis of alternative methods of communication. The

issue of selection and topography based verbal behavior will be discussed.

Science based methods for increasing vocal responding will be presented along

with video demonstrations of clinical applications of these procedures.
