Guest guest
Just in case I don't (or can't) get the burlap or the coir, and I need to get this, there are too many choices. I have no idea which one I should get for my first time. Helpful comments are appreciated. Guest guest
Melody, for your first time, I suggest trying simple organic soil as shown in my video-its cheap and easy...I bet a neighbor has a couple of spoonfuls of soil in their backyard you can use-you don't need much and its really not messy. Half a cup of soil will yeild you a good pie plate of sunnies to try it out. Just make sure the soil hasn't been sprayed with pesticides or yard spray. You can also buy small bags of organic soil at any garden center for a couple of bucks, but if you have to go to a garden center anyway, try the coir liners-walmart even carries them now. > > Just in case I don't (or can't) get the burlap or the coir, and I need to get this, there are too many choices. Guest guest
Hi all. I don't live near any nurseries, or Walmarts, or any place that sells organic soil. My neighbors (well, I don't know if their soil is organic or not and even if they say it's organic, how do I know. I'm not taking any chances. So I either go to the fabric store and see if they have burlap, or I go online and go to sproutpeople.com. So if I DO go to sproutpeople.com what do I buy? See, how I need you?? lol Melody > > Mel, > A nursery or hardware store with a garden center, might have coir in a bag not brick. Ask for coconut coir. If not, go with vermiculite and perlite. Both hold water, but vermiculite is a little expensive and by mixing it with purlite, you get the job done a little cheaper. > ew > > Which of these mediums do you advise? > > Just in case I don't (or can't) get the burlap or the coir, and I need to get this, there are too many choices. Guest guest
. Just went to Amazon. They had lots of coir this and coir coco that and I have no idea what these things are. They had mats and there was 2 reviews on the cocomoss thing. One guy liked it and the other guy said it came with mold. Since I don't really know what I'm doing, I'm not doing that. I'll probably go to Sproutpeople and buy the baby blanket or some such thing. I have to find which one I need. I've asked EW and he'll let me know. That way I'll be experimenting. I will probably be growing sunflower sprouts (after I start I mean) because they look absolutely wonderful and I can see me growing these lovely things. Melody Oh . I love the music in that video of yours.

Guest guest
You know, living in Brooklyn is very nice, with nice folks and I get along with people but if I ever won the lottery (which I don't play), I would move to Pennsylvania, have an organic backyard with a special sprout room with hydroponics all over the kazoo. And we'd all live next door to each other because I'd be a millionaire and we'd live next door and we'd grow everything. Can you imagine? No more going to the store. Just going in the backyard and picking the veggies. Boy, when I think of when I was 5 years old and I see old photos of me with my mom and her dad and her 10 brothers and sisters and they lived on a farm and they had chickens etc, and I am in these photos and I have absolutely no memory of this. Now we go into a supermarket and see chickens wrapped in plastic. Good God!! lol Melody
Guest guest
Mel, You would probably use 1 1/2 to 2 cups of soil with each batch. So 5 pounds of soil will do between 10 and 13 batches. So if you did a batch a week, it would last about 3 months. No bugs. Just pure good stuff ew Which of these mediums do you advise? > > > > Just in case I don't (or can't) get the burlap or the coir, and I need to get this, there are too many choices. Guest guest
Continuing the formula: So based on $3.95 for 5#. That's 30 to 35 cents a batch plus shipping and handling fees. ew Re: Which of these mediums do you advise? Oh, this sounds interesting. I do have a question. How long would a 5 lb bag last me. I have 2 big pie plates and pressing one on the other, on the bottom pie plate I have room for a LOT of seeds. So it's a big pie plate. And (this is important). Could there possibly be any bugs in this organic soil? Thanks much (good website by the way) Melody --- In sproutpeople%40yahoogroups.com

Guest guest
Hey Melody! What do you think of my beautiful sunnies now? http://dl.dropbox.com/u/35458235/100_2245.JPG Aren't they gorgeous? They are so crisp and sweet. And they have such good posture, too! I grew these on Coco Garden CCF650 650-Gram Compressed Coco Fiber Growing Medium that I got from Amazon. Do a search for this exactly as I have it here, and you will see what it is. It is lovely, and as you can see, it grows great sunnies!(The darn underline won't quit. I love the music in 's video, too! Guest guest
Okay, I got most of my questions answered. One final questions. Let's say I start my first batch and in about 7 days I start cutting my first sprouts. I cut from the bottom and they continue to grow right? How many cuttings from that original batch? Thanks very much Melody > > > > > > Mel, > > > A nursery or hardware store with a garden center, might have coir in a bag not brick. Ask for coconut coir. If not, go with vermiculite and perlite. Guest guest
NOPE! They don't continue to grow. Once you've cut them, they have given their life for you. Only pea shoots will continue to grow when cut. And you can probably start your first cutting in 5 days. ew Re: Which of these mediums do you advise? Okay, I got most of my questions answered. Guest guest
Well, Melody took a LONG walk today. I had to go to the Post Office which is a good 10 blocks from me. I went even farther, and I went into every florist I saw and asked the same question. Do you carry Organic Soil or a growing medium like Coir (they all knew what I meant) and THEY ALL said the same thing " Oh you have to go to the Nursery on 84th and New Utrecht. That is SOME WALK. I then (on the way home) hit every hardware store. No one sold anything I required. So I shall soon take a walk to the nursey on 84th and New Utrecht (I know you don't know where this is but thankfully I DO!!! lol I shall then regale you with a video of what I shall purchase. But, for today, I have been busy in my kitchen getting it all ready for when I'm sprouting my sunnies. I changed everything around and now it's all set. I was going to do this in March or April but I got industrious today. I like my ducks all in a row. Melody
