Marilyn, and group,

When my son was 4YO w/autism,CP,profound apraxia and superior IQ,I opted

for the use of a voice output computer for augmentative communication. My

intention was to send him to our neighborhood public school with typical

peers. I wanted my son's mode of communication to be readily understood by

school staff and peers. I knew that schools were a noisy environment in

which a silent communication system like PECS would be less likely to be

successful.

implemented Verbal Behavior. We saw incredible progress within weeks. These

be appropriate. Is your son able to echo words? If so, verbal speech is

preferred (from what I understand, I’m not a professional). Either way, I doubt

PECS would be harmful and they do have research showing that it increases

speech. However, Verbal Behavior techniques would increase speech more, I

believe.

teach your child to mand, but also to go beyond to ALL the functions of

language.
