Guest guest
Marilyn, and group, When my son was 4YO w/autism,CP,profound apraxia and superior IQ,I opted for the use of a voice output computer for augmentative communication. My intention was to send him to our neighborhood public school with typical peers. I wanted my son's mode of communication to be readily understood by school staff and peers. I knew that schools were a noisy environment in which a silent communication system like PECS would be less likely to be successful. ,Colin P's mom On Sat, Mar 12, 2011 at 6:48 PM, <marilyna@...> wrote: > > > , > > From my experience with my son (now 6), I would recommend Verbal Behavior > rather than PECS. Try the Verbal Behavior techniques with the aim of verbal speech and see if they work with your son. If no speech comes, then PECS would be appropriate. Is your son able to echo words? If so, verbal speech is preferred (from what I understand, I’m not a professional). Either way, I doubt PECS would be harmful and they do have research showing that it increases speech. However, Verbal Behavior techniques would increase speech more, I believe. > Two books would be helpful – The Verbal Behavior Approach and Teaching Language to Children with Autism or Other Developmental Disabilities. > PECS is actually based on the priniciples of Verbal Behavior. It is used for manding (requesting), but doesn’t go much farther than that. I preferred to teach my son to mand with words. The books above would give you the tools to teach your child to mand, but also to go beyond to ALL the functions of language. > > Marilyn > >
