AUTISM WORKSHOPS

1. ASPERGER SYNDROME & HIGH FUNCTIONING AUTISM: CREATING SOLUTIONS FOR SCHOOL

AND HOME LIFE

Joanne Gerenser, PhD, CCC-SLP

Individuals with Asperger Syndrome (AS) and High Functioning Autism (HFA) often

display skill deficits in the areas of socialization, communication, behavior,

and academics. Although many individuals with AS and HFA demonstrate IQ scores

within normal range, these social and learning deficits often greatly interfere

with their functioning in both school and home settings. This workshop will

provide an overview of the unique learning characteristics associated with

Asperger Syndrome and HFA, and provide programs to address these deficit

areas. Strategies for promoting social and abstract language, developing

social skills, addressing “melt-downs,” anxiety, other problem behaviors, and

strategies for classroom teachers will also be addressed.

Workshop Date: April 7, 2011

Location: Eden II/Genesis Outreach Autism Center, 1055 Avenue,

Bethpage, NY

Time: 9:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Fee: $95 - ASHA CEUs

2. DEVELOPING A BEHAVIOR INTERVENTION PLAN TO TREAT PROBLEM BEHAVIOR IN

INDIVIDUALS WITH ASD

Cicero, PhD, BCBA

This workshop will highlight important assessment considerations when

addressing the challenging behaviors of learners with autism spectrum

disorders. Attendees are provided with a myriad of assessment tools and data

collection to guide them in understanding the functions of challenging

behaviors, along with guidelines regarding how to select tools based upon a

particular case. These tools and strategies are discussed with respect to the

subsequent development of comprehensive, individually-tailored, behavioral

interventions. Topics including data collection, reinforcement principles,

functional assessment, planning for generalization, development of the behavior

intervention plan and overcoming common obstacles are discussed.

Workshop Date: May 13, 2011

Location: Eden II/Genesis Outreach Autism Center, 1055 Avenue,

Bethpage, NY

Time: 9:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Fee: $95 - BACB CEUs

3. READING AND INDIVIDUALS WITH ASD

Concetta Russo, ED

This workshop will explore a variety of evaluations used when assessing a

student's reading ability. Specific areas of importance in reading will be

discussed as they are reflected in the literature. There will be a focus on

reading difficulties faced by students with ASD. This workshop will also

introduce an innovative approach to reading instruction for students with ASD

known as Comprehensive Language Extension for Autism: an Approach to Reading

(CLEAAR). This approach includes language processing, decoding, fluency and

comprehension. The sequence of the curriculum will be individualized for each

student using an applied behavior analysis framework.

Workshop Date: May 17, 2011

Location: Eden II/Genesis Outreach Autism Center, 1055 Avenue,

Bethpage, NY

Time: 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Fee: $95

4. INNOVATIVE TEACHING STRATEGIES FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM

DISORDERS

Dana Battaglia, M.Phil, CCC-SLP

Individuals with ASD may demonstrate splinter skills in particular domains;

they may excel in auditory skills but be deficient in the visual skills area.

Teaching strategies should be developed to enhance areas of strength, and be

further supplemented by the use of readily available technology. During this

workshop, learning rates using different strategies will be discussed. How to

incorporate technology using these areas of strength will be presented.

Workshop Date: June 7, 2011

Location: Eden II/Genesis Outreach Autism Center, 1055 Avenue,

Bethpage, NY

Time: 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Fee: $95 - ASHA CEUs

EARLY CHILDHOOD/E.I. WORKSHOPS

These early childhood workshops are designed to assist in the development of

effective treatment programs for young children affected by autism spectrum

disorders and are targeted to professionals and parents seeking information for

children in the early intervention through preschool age range.

1. BUILDING A SOCIAL FOUNDATION WHEN WORKING WITH CHILDREN WITH AUTISM

SPECTRUM DISORDERS (ASD)

Dana Battaglia, M.Phil, CCC-SLP

In typically developing children, social skills develop from birth, and lay the

foundation for acquisition of language. When a child is first diagnosed with

ASD, social skills should be a focus of early intensive behavioral

intervention. However, at times, prerequisite (potentially maladaptive)

behaviors preclude social skills intervention early on. This workshop will

discuss pivotal social skills which lay the groundwork for language

acquisition. How to task analyze and develop a ‘social plan’ to increase

appropriate interaction with others will be reviewed.

April 4, 2011

4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Eden II/Genesis Outreach Autism Center, 1055 Avenue, Bethpage, NY

Fee: $75 - ASHA CEUs

2. TOILET TRAINING CHILDREN ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM

Cicero, PhD, BCBA

This workshop will present a variety of treatment programs designed to target

issues with toileting. Topics discussed in the area of toilet training will

include urination training, bowel training, initiating, requesting and

independence.

May 3, 2011

Eden II/Genesis Outreach Autism Center, 1055 Avenue, Bethpage, NY

4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

$75 - BACB CEUs

3. ASSESSMENT & INTERVENTION PLANNING FOR SELECTIVE EATING ISSUES

Mc, PhD, BCBA-D

Food selectivity and other feeding problems can occur in children with autism

spectrum disorders (ASD). This workshop will review specific food selectivity

issues in young children with autism. An overview of various research-based

methods that have been used successfully to treat food selectivity challenges

will be reviewed. Specific topics to be covered will include: assessment of

food selectivity, creating a dietary record, conducting preference assessments

related to food selectivity, collecting and analyzing data, data-based decision

making and strategies for increasing food preference.

May 12, 2011

Eden II/Genesis Outreach Autism Center, 1055 Avenue, Bethpage, NY

4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

$75 - BACB CEUs

4. BEHAVIORS IN YOUNG CHILDREN WITH AUTISM: RECOGNIZING AND ADDRESSING ISSUES

EARLY

Mc, PhD, BCBA-D

This workshop will provide attendees with ways to initially identify potential

problem behavior in young children with autism. Specifically, the

decision-making process regarding assessment and whether intervention is

actually warranted will be reviewed in detail. The impact of behavior on the

student's future will be discussed and how that might effect decision-making.

The workshop will provide attendees with practical strategies to use to prevent

behavior from occurring or re-occurring, thereby making your session time most

productive with the student.
