Sometimes children with autism are difficult to motivate, so teaching academic

skills and other tasks can seem like an impossible job. How can you become a

more effective teacher for students who are often indifferent? What's the

secret to creating a willing learner?

Amber Valentino, Psy.D, BCBA-D, will present " I Want to Learn! An Introduction

to Beginning Structured Teaching, " from 9 a.m. to noon on June 19 at the

Children's Medical Center of Dayton. The workshop will focus on the use of

positive reinforcement to create independence. It will also center on prompt

fading procedures, behavioral momentum and decreasing problem behavior.

Specifics of planned instruction using a verbal approach such as pace of

tutoring, combinations of easy and difficult tasks, and mixing and varying

expectations, will be reviewed, demonstrated and practiced. This lecture will

emphasize video review of actual teaching sessions that highlight common methods

used to teach language skills across a variety of learners.

The workshop is sponsored by Dayton Area Families for Effective Autism Treatment

(DAFEAT) and is the sixth in a series of 12 seminars to be conducted in 2010.

This lecture is free for DAFEAT members. Cost for non-members is $36 for an

individual (or $60 for married couples) and includes a year-long DAFEAT

membership. To register online, visit www.dafeat.org or email

registration@....

Dr. Valentino earned her doctorate in clinical psychology from Xavier University
