Guest guest
Years ago, we had a water softener in our system. We had to remove it. Something in the salt that was used to regenerate the machine was making my baby daughter sick. Not all systems use salt. You may have a reverse osmosis set up. I might go on line and locate that manufacturer and ask questions. If you end up using outside water, fill up a couple of jugs and keep them under the kitchen sink ew Soft water vs hard water Does anyone have information/experience with different types of water as to how it affects the sprouts? We have very hard water, we have a softer and an iron curtain system. Someone suggested using the outside (hard) water to soak and rinse them. That being very inconvenient, I was looking for info on the web, but unable to find. Thanks, Kim
Guest guest
Thank you Ernest, we do have a salt softner, I dump it in myself. I was mainly wondering if it is bad to sprout using soft water? > > Years ago, we had a water softener in our system. We had to remove it. Guest guest
Kim, I don't think you want that salt residue on you sprout. Do you that water in cooking? Do you use it to make soup? ew Soft water vs hard water > > Does anyone have information/experience with different types of water as to how it affects the sprouts? Guest guest
Well, I didn't think that was to great either, I got to thinking about water and everyone that lives in the city, theirs is full of chemicals and chlorine, I don't know how much comes through the tap, I am going to have it tested. Many people that have well water use systems to remove sulfur/rust and other things, if I did not have the softener our sinks, toilets, clothes and hair would be orange and have a sulfur smell. It is unfortunate, I will see what the test results bring. Kim > > > > Years ago, we had a water softener in our system. We had to remove it. Guest guest
home 'water softeners' add salt and filter out other chemicals - 'hard' water is a generalized term - like 'warm' or 'hot' -- in florida it means one thing in Wyoming it means another. Some chemicals will slow down or kill sprouting seeds -- look at a blow up diagram of seeds and you'll see little holes that help allow water into the seed -- clog those up and the water stops. Things which bind to oxygen, like iron, can rob the seed of oxygen it needs, often carried as 'free oxygen' in the water itself - it takes VERY little water to sprout seeds, in fact most folks uses hundreds of times MORE water than you need. You can easily set up a 'filter system' for outside water -- use it to soak - then filter it through a coffee (unbleached if you want, the amount of bleach in white filters has been pretty much removed) -- drain it into a jar, shake the jar, open the lid, close the lid, shake it again, and keep it in glass to use again - every few days boil it or bring it to near boil to kill of bacteria - and replace about once a week - a spray bottle and a 'keep me moist but not damp' cover is about all you need - The one way to find out -- since there is SO much more than simply 'water' the temp of the water makes a big difference too - start three sets of seeds - home water, bottled water from a store, and outside water - keep all on the shelf to keep temp steady -- and see which works best. No one can really say anything except that yes water makes a difference - but you won't know unless you 'test your hypothisis' .  Dream Well.
