Ask For Anything! An Introduction to Mand (request) Training with Sign Language

Saturday, March 20, 2010, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

Workshop with Dr. Amber Valentino

Location: The Children's Medical Center of Dayton

One Children's Plaza, Dayton, OH 45404, Auditorium (Lower Level)

This workshop will focus on:

.. The use of behavior analytic principles to teach early language skills

.. How to teach early requests to learners who have yet to develop vocal

speech

.. How to make early language training exciting and fun

.. Setting up the language training environment

.. How to make the transition from requesting with an augmentative

communication system to vocal language

After this workshop participants will.

· have knowledge of alternative strategies to teach vocal imitation

· have a better understanding of motivation and its role in teaching

early requesting skills

· be able to determine how to begin teaching early requests based on the

learner's skill set

· learn basic data collection strategies to aid in decision making

· learn to use prompts and prompt fading to teach independent requesting

· acquire problem solving skills for common obstacles that occur during

beginning language training

This seminar is free for DAFEAT members.

About Dr. Valentino.

Amber Valentino, Psy.D., BCBA-D earned her doctorate in clinical psychology from

Xavier University in 2008. She is a licensed psychologist and board certified

behavior analyst - doctoral. Dr. Valentino specializes in the assessment and

treatment of language deficits particularly in children with autism. She

currently works for a nonprofit organization in Atlanta, GA where she is

responsible for case management, staff training, supervision of undergraduate

and graduate trainees, and parent training/consultation.
