Guest guest
Looks like the school would reimburse volunteers, at least after a certain period of work. School administrators are not user friendly, but then they do have to be careful because of some volunteers have been pedophiles. It is a shame that the kids are deprived because of actions of a few, but that is what they have and they must check background and do a complete check through FBI and local police. They do generally charge teachers and other potential employees for the check but then they would be getting paid. For volunteers they should pay for the help. Or at least should have teachers in charge who keep eyes on it so they wouldn't need the search as kids were not alone with anyone.  But it is because of others actions, not anything about you. You might be able to invite the classes to come to your place and see your gardens and learn about planting and sprouting, etc. That would be more of a field trip with teachers and chaperones. They don't charge the places that allow kids in for field trips. But they they would have to go back and do the garden  themselves. It looks like you could go in and do a demonstration for the class with the teacher right there and it not be a problem. You don't want the teacher to drop off the kids to you anyway. Teacher should take care of the kids and you should be albe to just explain or show the teacher and class. Good luck to you. Each opportunity that came up fell thru for one reason or another. Many because I don't speak Spanish. Today I heard of a school that wanted to start a garden. Went over to talk to the Principal. Was told that I would have to go to the District Office to fill out a Volunteer Form. Did so. They would not take my certification and fingerprint information from either the County or State. They wanted me to pay $40 to be processed. I said, " No Thank You'. I wonder how many people are volunteering in their school district. ew
Guest guest
That is insane! Here you are trying to volunteer your time, and they put you through THAT? I am so sorry for THEIR stupidity-they are missing out on a gem of a teacher! I wonder if you would have been so easily dismissed had you offered to teach English as a second language...oh, wait...we no longer need English, do we?? > > When I first became a Mater Gardener, I wanted to work in school gardens with the kids. Guest guest
That is so insane I can't tell you. It's their loss. You would have been a heck of a teacher. Guest guest
As a former cop, I am ALL for fingerprinting and background checks for anyone working around kids, but EW said he had that, but they wouldn't accept his state or county copies of it, which is silly, since they are all run through the same system! Having him pay to have it done again is just a waste of time and money! Their loss, big time! > > > > When I first became a Mater Gardener, I wanted to work in school gardens with the kids. Guest guest
Personally, it really doesn't matter about these checks. They have been doing it for years, not just after 9-11. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that these security checks are only for the benefit of the college/medical school/EMT class which I have had to go through. This information is shared to whatever the appropriate venue if a warrant pops up on someone. When I was taking my EMT course at Mt. San College, we were all warned by our instructor that a security check would be done, and if any of us may have any kind of warrant, just leave NOW. Or the class will most likely be crashed by the cops/fed marshals/etc. and drag someone's sorry ass away. It's just another means of trying to catch those on the lam. That's all. Which is one reason why they do fingerprinting to confirm you are who you say you are.
Guest guest
Why do you need to be fingerprinted and have a background check to become a Master Gardener? That confuses me more than the volunteer thing. Though I agree it's silly that they won't accept what's already in file - unless it was so long ago they think you've fallen into bad ways and need to be checked out again. LOL. Andresa > > At the Junior College where I volunteer, I had to fill out paperwork. Read rules and sign that I understood them, there was no fee involved. > > I had to pay for finger printing and a background check before I could take the Master Gardener training. I understood what that was for, but this school district will not accept my records from County of Los Angeles. They want to do their own. > I wonder how much of the $40 is some sort of profit. > ew >
