An Introduction to Toilet Training for Children with Special Needs

Saturday, August 28, 2010, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

Workshop with Amber Valentino, Psy. D, BCBA-D

Purpose / Rationale:

If you have tried the conventional methods to toilet train your child with

special needs with no success, this seminar is for you! Amber will teach

specialized, applied behavior analysis methodologies you can use to overcome

common toileting obstacles including bowel movement training, nighttime

incontinence and self-initiation. She will provide examples of successful

toileting cases and opportunities for workshop participants to ask questions

regarding their own experiences.

PLEASE NOTE: Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are available for Board

Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and Board Certified Associate Behavior

Analysts (BCaBAs). For more details, email CEUs@....

This workshop will focus on:

· Preparation strategies including fluid loading, garment type, alarm

devices, etc. and their role in controlling successful toileting

· Reinforcement strategies including dry checks, etc. and their role

· Data collection methods to aid in decision making on successful versus

unsuccessful protocols

· Common obstacles to toileting including self-initiation, bowel

movement training, nighttime incontinence, etc. and ways to treat them

Learning Objectives for CEUs: (After this workshop participants will…)

ü List 3 antecedent strategies for toilet training and the role of stimulus

control in their use

ü List 2 methods for setting an initial toileting schedule

ü When provided with a sample graph, interpret the success of a toileting

intervention and write 3 possible changes to make based on the data presented.

This seminar is free for DAFEAT members. Cost for non-members is $36 and

About the presenter…

Amber Valentino, Psy.D., BCBA-D earned her doctorate in clinical psychology from

Xavier University in 2008. She is a licensed psychologist and board certified

behavior analyst – doctoral. Dr. Valentino specializes in the assessment and

treatment of language deficits particularly in children with autism. She

currently works for a nonprofit organization in Atlanta, GA where she is

responsible for case management, staff training, supervision of undergraduate

and graduate trainees, and parent training/consultation.
