Guest guest
I have a 6 year old daughter with autism. She is in a self contained ABA class at a public school.I do not feel like she is making the expected progress there, she is learning but it's very slow. I am planning on home schooling her and that very thought scraes me but I want to really consider and give it a try. My biggest concern with home schooling or for that matter working with her is, I DO NOT have instructional control on her, she just doesn't listen to me and work with me. To make her do a little thing is a HUGE tantrum and a big fight. How do I start establishing instructional control with her? What do I need to do and start? At school, they train me as to how to work on things with her, she does great when the instructor is here but the minute they leave she just doesn't want to do that. She is NOT motivated with these tasks, the problem though is there is NOTHING motivating for her except each junk food like cookies and candy which I can't keep on feeding for the whole day.She tantrums to come in to the house and so I try to make the time with me very enjoyable for her so that she will come inside the hosue nicely. If I get strict, I am very nervous that she will tantrum for coming inside the house. Where do I start? I worked with several BCBAs but nobody had a solution wherein I could just work with her and at the same have a decent relationship as a mom and daughter. My second concern is how do you maintain that discipline of working with child 6-8 hours a day and be motivated and dedicated at doing that?I work full time now, but I want to quit and work to do this, but I am nervous that I might not do a good job. Any thoughts, experiences and advice is greatly appreciated.
