UTILIZING THE AUTISM DIAGNOSTIC OBSERVATION SCHEDULE (ADOS) AS PART OF A COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT IN DIAGNOSING AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS E. , PhD, BCBA-D The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) is now widely considered to be one of the most useful tools in diagnosing autism spectrum disorders. The ADOS is a semi-structured, standardized assessment of communication, social interaction, and play, for individuals who have been referred for a psychological evaluation because of possible Autism or other Pervasive Developmental Disorders. This workshop will provide an overview of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) criteria used in making a possible diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder, and how the ADOS assesses for the specific characteristics reflected in the DSM criteria. Specific activities that comprise the ADOS and the DSM characteristics they are designed to assess for will be reviewed. Workshop participants will also receive an overview of the other assessment tools that are often used at the E.I. level that can supplement the use of the ADOS and provide additional information in making an informed decision about a possible autism spectrum diagnosis.
